My HR team is asking me to lower the rating for one of my top performers from “Exceeded Expectations” to “Meets Expectations.” I strongly disagree - that doesn’t accurately reflect his performance.

After our SVP left the company, I stepped into the gap as the next-level manager, and I relied heavily on him throughout the transition. He consistently stepped up, took on additional responsibility, and provided critical support when we needed it most. He had a stellar year, and his current rating accurately reflects his contributions.

It’s f'n frustrating because I’m even willing to take some of the impact from my own promotion to make sure he receives the recognition he earned.
