Calgary Shaw by-election is critical for Nenshi to survive as leader of the NDP

Nenshi won the NDP leadership primarily on the promise he could win in Calgary.

Since then, the NDP poll numbers have tanked, and he’s barely made a ripple on the provincial scene. He’s been invisible, and Smith continues to do as she pleases with high levels of support:

In 2023, Notley’s candidate in Shaw got 44%. It’s hard to imagine the NDP winning the province without winning Shaw.

If Nenshi can’t win here, I have to think there’s little justification for him to remain as leader.

Abacus: Lewis not moving the needle in Quebec

Ouch. After a month of Avi Lewis campaigning in Quebec, an Abacus had the NDP at 4%. Singh got 4.5% there in 2025.

Bad experience today on “easy” line

My insurance company asked for a particular document related to my mortgage. I went through the website and could find no way to get this. I put my request into the help field and was instructed to call a phone number that turned out to be the Easyline.

I called, did all the inputting of my info, waited about 5 minutes and got a live human. She said I needed a different department and transferred me right away.

The other department answered quickly, but they couldn’t hear me for some reason, and hung up.

The prompts had said that if we got cut off, I’d be called back. I waited a few minutes, no call. So I tried again.

This time, I went through all the prompts and waited 35 minutes before someone answered. She told me my request was for the mortgage department. No, she couldn’t transfer me. “But the last lady did!l “No, that’s not possible.”

She gave me a number, I asked when it was open, time zones and was it open on the weekend. She gave me two different answers.

I tried the number, it was for some other bank Id never heard of. I stuck with it, trying to enter account numbers, etc. and was told my information was not accurate/valid.

Checked Google again, 2-3 different numbers popped up, all with different hours. Tried them all, no luck.

I’ll try again Monday I guess. But all this effort to get one piece of paper. Infuriating.

How much time does Avi Lewis have?

A poll just released by Nanos has the following result:

~~
Q: Question - For each of the following federal political party leaders, do you think they have or do not have the qualities to be a good political leader?

Avi Lewis:
Have - 22%
Not have - 40%
Unsure - 38%

~~

Five months into his leadership, Lewis is still hardly known. And among those willing to express an opinion, two to one don’t like him.

Not a great start. Other leaders have been able to capitalize on their newness to get a lot of attention and a bump in the polls. On the other hand, it’s hard when you have a small handful of MPs and they keep deserting the ship.

I’ve expressed my opinion that Lewis should have run in a by-election to capitalize on the attention it would bring. I’ve certainly heard from others who disagree with that take.

So how long do we give our still new leader to show some results? When does the “build the party” strategy show results?
