Advice on toning down henna redness after indigo has washed out

Hello!! Humbly coming back to this sub to request some advice…

4 weeks on from my one step henndigo and the henna redness is coming through… indoors its not too bad but in direct summer sunlight i think it looks a bit unnatural and veering too much to red/ burgundy rather than brown. I guess the indigo has now washed out of my hair and the henna is shining through? 🥲

I suspect the more ‘fiery’ colour is appearing mostly where the henna is sitting on top of chemically dyed hair and/ or my temples where I have a higher % of greys.

Is there any way I could tone down the red at this stage? Would amla on its own work to tone the red down a bit without making the overall colour too much darker? Or would I need to mix it with henna to make it stick, meaning I’d end up darkening my overall colour?

Or maybe I just need to repeat henndigo to bring back the brown? not sure if this is the way as worried about how much darker my hair will get, hmm…

I’ll try experimenting with hair from my brush first of course, but very grateful for tips on what to try next!

Obsessed with henndigo - thank you!!

thank you so much for all the tips and resources in this sub!!

I had a bit of a freak out last time I got my hair chemically dyed ~12 weeks ago to cover my greys, and decided I wanted to stop and go back to henna after many years.

6 weeks after that I tried Henné Colour premixed powder, 75% chestnut brown (indigo, henna & cassia I believe) and 25% copper (henna only) but it came out way too orange for my taste, especially where I have most of my white hair i.e. at the temples.

about 6 weeks after that the henna had faded (no surprise - no dye release and I’d used hot water!) and my greys were back too (pic 7).

so after much reading and testing I put in an order with Renaissance Henna and did the one step henndigo process: 50% henna (20hrs dye release, UK cool tap water only), 50% indigo (mixed with cool tap water only just before mixing with the henna and applying). kept it on my roots for 2.5hrs and lengths for 1.5hrs before rinsing with water only.

results are pics 1-6 (1 &2: indoor by window, 3: indoor artificial light; 4: outdoors and unbrushed; 5-6: roots).

I may need to try the two step process for my roots sometime as I can see my greys coming through at the top of my head, but I don’t mind so much as they’re a kind of a coppery colour for now.

a huge thanks to all those sharing advice and tips on here, you rock! 🤘
