Switch to henna from dyes

  1. Other than being allergic to dyes, what is the reason people start using henna. I have being using dyes and am wondering if the switch to henna is worth it or not. I don’t have any allergies but I fear use to store bought dyes will cause issue in long term.
  2. How big an effort it is to maintain hair with henna treatment? Are winters difficult?
  3. How frequently one needs to reapply the henna paste. I have major grey hair section in the front hairline. And looking for brown color.
  4. What is something you wish you knew before starting the whole routine.
  5. Any routine suggestions and tools which might help?

Note: have been following this channel for a month and really appreciate the detailed information you all provide in the post.

Advice on toning down henna redness after indigo has washed out

Hello!! Humbly coming back to this sub to request some advice…

4 weeks on from my one step henndigo and the henna redness is coming through… indoors its not too bad but in direct summer sunlight i think it looks a bit unnatural and veering too much to red/ burgundy rather than brown. I guess the indigo has now washed out of my hair and the henna is shining through? 🥲

I suspect the more ‘fiery’ colour is appearing mostly where the henna is sitting on top of chemically dyed hair and/ or my temples where I have a higher % of greys.

Is there any way I could tone down the red at this stage? Would amla on its own work to tone the red down a bit without making the overall colour too much darker? Or would I need to mix it with henna to make it stick, meaning I’d end up darkening my overall colour?

Or maybe I just need to repeat henndigo to bring back the brown? not sure if this is the way as worried about how much darker my hair will get, hmm…

I’ll try experimenting with hair from my brush first of course, but very grateful for tips on what to try next!

Black henna?

Hello, I got some henna done for the first time ever today with one of my friends. She is Somlai and recommended me a Somali artist that she frequently goes to. I got home and was reading on various things about henna just to care for it properly (Also also to see how I could fade it more because its very dark on me.) Through my reading, I came across a lot of things that said never to do black henna as it is dangerous. I am very anxious right now and just wanted to ask for any advice?...

Trying a new henna mixture method

So, until recently I've been mixing my pure henna with cream of tartar and room temp water.

Then I bought hibiscus powder and replaced the cream of tartar with that, but I didn't feel like the colour was bright red enough.

A month or so ago, another redditor mention making a year out of the hibiscus powder first, letting it cool to room temp, and using that to mix their henna.

I did that this evening, and will do my roots tomorrow.

I already notice the the mixture is a much deeper red when making the hibiscus tea. 🤞🏼

I'll keep you posted.

Ingredients used;

Indian Natural Hair Care : pure henna

Foothills Natural : hibiscus flower powder.

I used 10 grams of hibiscus powder and 160 ml of boiling water to make the tea.

I used 40 grams of pure henna and 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar.

After making the tea, and letting it cool to room temperature, I mixed it into the glass.bowl of henna powder / cream of tartar mixture. I added an additional 40 ml.pf room temperature water to get it to the correct consistency.

Covered my bowl, and am letting it stand on my counter.

Adding an acid

When just using regular henna powder, does mixing a little bit of a type of acid, like ACV or lemon juice help keep it lighter or does it help it darken more? I’ve seen mixed comments about it and I was just curious what it does vs just the henna powder and water.

Level 4 brown hair - can it be done with henna + indigo?

I am of Indian descent. Ironically, henna is not in fashion these days for hair. I have a few stubborn gray hairs but they are spread apart (maybe 5% tops). I currently use Revlon Colorsilk Dark Brown 30.

I tried pure henna (mixed it on my own) and it barely did anything for my grey hairs. The color was also off.

What mix of indigo/henna can achieve Level 4 brown hair? How about level 3?

1 hour henna/cassia blend on 10% gray

I've had success rinsing henna/cassia mix out earlier, so I wanted to mention and post some pics.

I started using henna about a year ago and read in most posts to leave it 4+ hours. It came out so orange that I started experimenting with rinsing it earlier and have now settled on 1 hour (from when I finish applying which takes like 15-20m).

It comes out a pretty muted reddish brown, although its can be very red in certain lights. My bathroom mirror really brings it out so I got a photo of that too. This is the next day after dying, so the reddest it ever is then it fades down from that. These pics are all done at the same time, just in different lighting.

It completely covers the gray as long as I get good coverage and makes them pop like highlights. Besides that, it doesn't change my base color too much, so potentially a good option for those trying to blend grays and get an auburn wash, rather than going with a stronger orange/red.

This is a 50/50 henna/cassia blend - SaraHenna and generic cassia that I bought locally in Thailand. I used amla powder as the acid. I put a plastic bag on my head for an hour and done!

Dye my hair

Hi everyone,

I have very light blonde hair and have been bleaching it for 15 years. I’d like to get my hair into better condition and start using henna. However, I’m undecided because I’ve read comments claiming it dries out the hair significantly and coats the cuticle, meaning that with repeated use, treatments like masks and oils can no longer penetrate the hair shaft.

I read that some lost their hair du to henna.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on using henna in the long run—thanks so much! 😊

How do I make better henna paste ?

I recently tried for the first time to make henna paste, but the results are not so good. Here is what I did:

- used basic henna powder (bio, from egypt) mixed with a bit of sugar and water until it looked like nutella paste

- let it rest for 24hrs in a temperate place then put it in a cone.

I also built my plastic cone but I had struggle using it (the paste would NOT go down the moment I closed it, maybe I had put to much in it ?)

And: the paste had many lumps; it was either too runny or it came out in clumps. I left it on for 6 hours but the result is very slight; it will be gone in a few days....

Please give me advices !!

Lush Hair Henna? (On mousey virgin hair)

Hello! I have brown hair I have never even dyed with natural products -- not even kool-aid as a kid. I have always wanted to try it, but I was too scared. I just turned 32 and I want to do something different. I could really use some advice!

I'm worried certain hair colours won't flatter me, so I dragged my feet. I am still worried I'll make myself look worse, and I currently work in a front-facing retail position under harsh fluorescent lights, in which case a cool-toned colour like noir may not be the ticket.

I have heard the quality of the Lush hair henna has deteriorated since then. Is there a dupe out there I can try, or should I just go for it? Does anyone have any tips??

I am white with very pale, cool-toned skin (used to have freckles) and mousey darkish brown hair with some greys. It looks kind of ashy and dry under the retail lights and I have many flyaways from split ends. The hair at my temples is thinner and less pigmented, so I need to style and set my hair a certain way to avoid bald-looking spots. I'm not sure if colouring it will blend these in or emphasize them further.

I am not looking for a super long-term commitment to one colour, or a ton of root maintenance due to my busy work schedule. A semi-permanent colour with an even, gradual fade would be ideal. Something that can give my hair some added nourishment, even better.

One concern I have ofc is that a darker hair colour will emphasize any features I am insecure about, but I also currently look washed out af. I am most likely going to be dyeing it alone.

[[For added context, my ex-stepsister just passed. I always thought of her as the epitome of cool. Back in the day, she used to dye her hair with Lush hair caca. I said I'd try it but I never did. She would often use black, sometimes reds. I remembered how awesome she looked and I definitely idolized her. Her funeral is coming up in a little over a week. It doesn't totally make sense, but I want to do it before then. Life is short, I'm feeling nostalgic, and I want to do something to honour the memories I have of her.]]

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Henna over bleached hair result

Just henna'd my hair (I'm in the UK) for the first time in years and I just love it! This is freshly rinsed out so curious to see how much it'll develop over the next few days. I used a 50/50 mix of henna and cassia over bleached hair. Thinking I may add some Amla or indigo next time for a deeper result but still very happy! Main reason I'm posting because I've been researching for ages and wanted to visualise henna over bleached and couldn't find that much so hoping this helps others in similar position!

Which Light Mountain henna color would you recommend?

Hi all! I have dark brown hair naturally, but quite a few grays coming in and some light brown highlights from over a year ago in my hair.

I am wanting to get as close to a natural red (warmer orange tones). Is that even possible with my hair color? I know henna won’t make my hair lighter. If so, would the bright red or red from Light Mountain be best?

Thanks!

Edit: I should add that this is my hair with ZERO product in it. Normally it is not this frizzy hahahaha😅😂

Hair swatches vs inspo (cant decide on formula)

First one is 50/50 cassia and light mountain henna in light red and second is 100% light mountain henna in light red. This is right after rinsing so before oxidation.

Redhead struggling with roots

I have always been a natural redhead, but like most at a certain age, we start to go more cinnamon and sugar. I have never had any processing my hair other than using henna and mixes from Rainbow.

The red makes me way too red, especially in the sun. Copper almost goes orange. Interesting light brown gives me a much more realistic, looking dark Auburn red but a little too dark for me. Trying to find something that is as close to my natural colors as possible.

This week after six weeks from my last coloring, I spent the entire week outside and in the water. Oddly, it looks more natural than it ever has since childhood. I doubt I could capture that exact color. I struggle because when I just do my roots, I can see the layers coming in, but if I just keep added color to the whole thing, it gets too bright or too dark.

Attaching a few pictures for reference and hopefully some insight.

Should I use teatree or cajeput oil for my henna?

They are translated to my language the same, but it's not. It's a bit confusing 😅. Which one is better for henna for body art?

Scared I got black henna

I got a henna tattoo at en event. But I don‘t think it’s real henna. I’ll include photos of directly after and 14 hours after. I didn’t get the faint stain at all after washing the thing off. The artist is henna By Nema. It’s my first time getting henna.

Rajasthani henna

Hi everyone! I'm tempted to re-dye my hair with henna but this time with Rajasthani henna! I can see that some people get more of a burgundy tone with it while others get more of a deeper, wine red? I'm confused why exactly is that? I definitely don't want burgundy hair. I prefer wine red! :)
