Del Sur is on another level

They announced on their newsletter that they’ll be closing sometime in June to expand their storefront so had to make it my next bakery expedition.
Having tried Kasama, bad butter, sugar moon, lost Larson, fat peach, and more, I was pleasantly surprised to have it become my new personal favorite bakery in the city.
longanisa croissant was one of the best pastries I have ever tried. The lamination is simply ridiculous in this behemoth of a croissant. It’s so flaky and crunchy with all its layers, and the soy caramel glaze on top is insane. It has the perfect umami bite with a slight earthiness and sweetness that pairs amazingly with the croissant’s layers. And of course, the longanisa filling is delicious. It’s smoky and so bold. Simply a masterpiece.
Another beloved Filipino flavor shone through the ube oatmeal cream pie. The brown butter oatmeal cookies were remarkably rich and the perfect vessel for the decadent ube buttercream. A wonderful synergy of sweetness and saltiness.
The turon danish had wonderful banana flavor. It was layered with the most amazing caramelized banana jam and creamy vanilla flan on top of another display of laminated dough expertise.
The pandan basque cake blew me away. The exterior is so crisp while the inside remained really light and moist. The namelaka cream was smooth and floral and paired nicely with the bright fruit jam, which changes seasonally.
The calamansi chamomile bun was probably the best cruffin I have ever tasted. It was so crunchy, and the chamomile curd filling was really tart and tangy. If you like lemon desserts, this will be right up my our alley as it doesn’t hold back on sourness.
The toasted rice chocolate chip cookie is so unique and delicious. I love the combination of milk and dark chocolate, and the toasted rice dough flavor is so interesting. It makes the cookie feel like a chocolate rice crispy treat.
Next up on my list are Milli by metric, au levain, Loba, Allez, publican, daisies, Obelix, and floriole. The amt of specialty bakeries in this city is genuinely endless. Lmk what else I’m missing

Joongboo steamed dumplings are perfection

Both the kimchi pork and red bean buns were incredible and came out steaming hot… gives me hope for finding more authentic Korean in the city

Sugar moon is exceptional

tahini chocolate chip cookie really is unbelievable. The tahini is potent, and it works surprisingly well. The flavor is just so complex and rich, and there is no overwhelming sweetness. The texture is incredible—really light and crisp.

tiramisu cloud cookie truly tastes like eating a cloud. It’s so fluffy with strong coffee flavor and luscious cream filling.

The espresso corn cookie was shockingly delicious. The cornflakes are so good and crunchy. The cookie is salty, but the espresso notes really shine. Wonderfully chewy base as well.

The chai spice roll was flawless. Immense cinnamon taste and so soft and gooey. The chai makes the roll pleasant and fragrant and goes well with the cream cheese lathered on top.

The lamination on the banana pudding croissant is insane. It’s stuffed with lots of real bananas and yummy vanilla custard and topped with graham cracker crumble. The pastry’s layers are some of the best I have ever encountered. So light and flaky.

I also got the potato focaccia for a savory choice, and it made me regret not getting some more. I’ve always had a bad sweet tooth, but this focaccia may have converted me. It was so fluffy and soft and topped with the most amazing caramelized onions and potato slices. It was herbaceous and had the creamiest crème fraiche topping.

They did not review how to find the products of E1 reactions. Could anyone help draw what products may be correct?

Of course the extravagant specialty bakeries here in Chicago are incredible, but when it comes to the basics, lost Larson really stood out to me!

Cinnamon roll: lived up to the hype. So gooey in the middle but feels like it’s getting a hug from a croissant. Such great texture contrast and the frosting was yummy too

Kouign Amann: might be my favorite in the city. I love the various stuffed Kouign Amanns offered at other spots, but for a plain one, this might be the best I’ve had. Never tried sea salt in one before, but really went well with the sugariness

Cardamom bun: soft and nice exterior crunch. Cardamom flavor really shines

Maybe not as out there or ambitious as other spots, but it does everything to the highest quality. Really recommend!

I’ve been posting photos and reviews for years now an am at level 9 and have always wondered this. What exactly counts as a view on a photo, just scrolling past? Sometimes I get thousands, and other times it’s nothing. I have one picture that reached two million and seems to have stopped getting views for months now
