Hi all,

I'll try and condense this as easily and as shortly as I can - so here goes...

I worked for a company for approximately 9 months before unfortunately being made redundant (it transpires the company was in debt, and 1 by 1 employees were discreetly being made redundant - I was the 9th).

I was made redundant in April 2025.

Several months later (around September 2025) I downloaded the HMRC app and signed in etc. only to see a red warning message to say that I had underpaid tax for the previous year.

When I called HMRC to discuss, we found that it was linked to my employment at the company above (the one I was at for 9 months) and that I would have to pay HMRC this money back by the end of January 2026 at the latest.

That being said, I was advised to write a letter asking for another department to investigate whether this is employer error (which it looked to be) and after several calls trying to follow this up - each and every time I'm told that it will be passed onto the relevant department and that I'll hear back in a few days (I never do).

The last update I had (back in January 2026) was that they've written to the employer and will get in touch with me once they've heard back.

Now, I have called HMRC this week (the 11th call since September 2025-April 2026) and have been told that there is no further update and that this is still ongoing!

My question is...

A) Am I likely to get any fine(s) as originally it was supposed to be paid by January 2026

B) If they don't hear back from the employer what happens?

I'm glad (in a way) that I downloaded the app and saw the underpayment of tax issue as I wasn't notified by mail for this either!

I've done all the chasing to try and get this resolved ASAP! as it's around £1000 they want should I end up being liable - but I can't get any closure on this.

Thanks for reading - any help or advice would be most appreciated.
