From "Brain on Fire" to Stability. How NAC (ACC) changed everything for me.

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience from this past month because it’s been a living hell, and I finally feel like I’m starting to see the light.

A month ago, I suffered a moderate concussion. For the next few weeks, I felt like my brain was literally on fire. The inflammation was so intense I couldn't think, I couldn't focus, felt completely "animalistic" — just pure survival mode and disorientation.

The worst part was the brain fog combined with derealization. It felt like I was watching my life through a thick pane of glass. Everything felt fake, distant, and terrifying. I was even afraid to go outside because it felt overstimulating.

I’ve been on a various protocols, tried different schools of dealing with the TBI, I have about a dozen of costly supplements (including creatine, omega 3, ubiquinol, B, D, K vitamins, Zink bisglycinate, Magneseum treonate, etc etc), but the real game-changer was the N-acetylcystein aka NAC (known as ACC in Europe).

How NAC actually works for TBI:

  1. Glutathione Booster: NAC is a precursor to glutathione, the body’s "master antioxidant." After a concussion, the brain is flooded with free radicals that "burn" neurons. NAC replenishes glutathione, which acts like a fire extinguisher for that oxidative stress.
  2. Glutamate Regulation: Trauma causes "glutamate storms" — an excess of the brain's main excitatory neurotransmitter. This makes your brain feel like it's "on fire" and overstimulated. NAC helps regulate the glutamate loop (via the cystine-glutamate antiporter), bringing the brain back to a state of calm and stability.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: It inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines. It literally cools down the neuroinflammation that causes that thick "brain fog."

After consistently taking NAC, the "burning" sensation in my head finally stabilized. The brain fog has lifted significantly. While I still have some lingering derealization (the "glassy" feeling), the inner chaos has stopped. My head finally feels stable.

If you’re struggling with that "brain on fire" feeling after a hit to the head:

  1. Don't give up.
  2. Look into NAC (with your doctor's okay, obviously).
  3. Be patient with the "glass wall" feeling; it takes time for the nerves to rewire.

Has anyone else had NAC as their "miracle" supplement for TBI recovery? How long did it take for your derealization to fully fade once the inflammation was gone? Anticipating questions: at first I took about 2400mg/day, then gradually over a course of a week I lowered the dosage to the recomended standard dose of 600mg/day. I didn't experience any side effects, like heartburn in the stomach, like they sometimes warn. Also, AMA. Good luck everybody.
