Doubt regarding Promotion

I’m currently an Analyst with around 3 years of experience as an AWS Data Engineer. Back in January, my manager told me that this would likely be my promotion year (Analyst → Consultant).

The issue is with my current project situation. My lead is an SC who is also on a milestone year for promotion to Manager, and I’ve been raising snapshots directly to him. The project itself doesn’t really have much actual development work, and I’ve been wanting to move to a proper AWS-focused project where I can work on real engineering and development tasks.

However, my lead doesn’t want me to leave. The current project is supposed to end in June, and although I’ve heard from higher management that billing for the team is likely ending, he keeps telling me the project will extend and that both of us will continue together somewhere else. He’s also promising me the highest ratings and flags if I stay with him.

The problem is that I genuinely want to move into a stronger AWS project for career growth instead of staying in support/low-development work just for ratings.

My concern is: if I switch to another project now, could that negatively impact or delay my promotion/milestone from Analyst to Consultant? Has anyone been in a similar situation where they had to choose between career growth vs staying with a lead for ratings/promotion support?
