"A Straight Guy’s Gay Crisis" - fun, fun, fun!
I binged this in one go and spent the entire read sitting there with a shit-eating grin on my face (which, I confess, is usually a resting bitch face).
There’s barely any drama here. No endless misunderstandings, no emotional torture Olympics, no characters acting like they’ve never experienced human communication before. It’s just warm. Funny. A little messy. Very alive.
The relationship feels super natural - two people slowly fitting into each other’s lives in a way that feels organic and comforting instead of manufactured for plot twists. Their chemistry is sweet without becoming saccharine, and the humor is good.
I never thought I'd be laughing outloud over a line like “Jiang Qian died a peaceful death,” but apparently this novel had other plans for me.
The writing style is also very immersive. It captures youth and university life so, so well: staying up too late talking nonsense with friends, posting crap online, your entire existence revolving around food and studies, dorm gossip, stupid little incidents becoming core memories. It feels vibrant and real.
It’s also incredibly wholesome. There’s a proper friend group, supportive parents, people making healthy decisions, and emotional stability.
Read this if:
- you need respite after an angsty read;
- you’ve been overdosing on tragedy and suffering;
- you need a palate cleanser;
- you want something that’ll leave you smiling instead of staring at the ceiling in psychological distress;
- you liked the overall school vibe of Wait for Me After School;
- you want university/youth stories that actually feel real and not like a checklist of tropes
It's a great story, light and fun.
