There's a friend who always asks me for my (digital) studying notes before exams, as I make really good ones. He says he makes his own as well, but 90% of time he "forgets" about exams or "has no time" and thus in fact does not make his own. When he makes them, he also sends them to me, but his writing is totally illegible (not his fault of course), and also I would never learn with them as they are honestly just not good enough.
The thing is, I feel more and more treated like a service contractor. I sometimes spend 10 to 15 hours to summarize everything for a single exam, while he often only starts learning the day before, so that he usually gets to enjoy free weekends even before exams while I work. He even complains regularly that he still needs to ask me for my notes and that I don't make a habit of sending them. I once asked him if it wouldn't be fair to pay me, and he suggested half a dollar for notes that I had spent more than 15 hours working on.
On the one hand, I get his point: Sending those notes is no additional cost for me. Also, it doesn't conflic with my own use of them, the value for me does not change as I can still learn with them. The sending itself is neutral for me and positive for him.
On the other hand, I can't help but feel exploited, especially (but of course not only) due to his service mentality. He asked me for notes again this morning (for an exam we write tomorrow), and also sent three question marks an hour ago as I ignored his message so far. Well, I also didn't write my studying notes so far, so to mock his attitude I replied "Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to make them yet - maybe you could for both of us this time? But please write a little more neatly so I can actually read it. Oh, and 3 p.m. would be a good deadline - I want to have enough time left to study after all. Thanks in advance! 😁". But he just replied that he doesn't have time, he didn't even get the irony.
Am I the asshole for not wanting to send him my studying notes any longer?
