For those of us who lost a partner and have kids under 18, make sure to apply for survivors benefits (assuming your partner worked and paid into SS). You can get up to 6 months backpay so you don’t have to go immediately. Downside is you have to gather all the documents and answer questions in person at some point. It can get emotional at the SSA office. Like most people this wasn’t even on my radar and the last thing I wanted to do was go through government documents reminding me of the loss.
