US Government Cheese

My grandma has talked about "government cheese" that she used to get way back in the day here in the US, and always goes on about how good it was. I'm aware of the massive amount of cheese the US used to hoard, but does anyone here remember eating it? Was it closer to a sharp american, or maybe cheddar? I've never had this cheese of legend and want to understand why my grandma liked it enough to remember it. She isn't exactly good with words so "purdy darn good" is about as detailed as a description as I have.
