JURE MATRIMONII Adult Children Born in the US – Do I Need to Correct Birth Certificate Discrepancies ?
Posting for a friend. TY ;
I reacquired Italian citizenship in 2024 (via riacquisto). I currently live in Italy with my wife. We have adult children, so my qualifying residency period was reduced from two years to one.
Here's my situation and my questions:
My children's US birth certificates list my birthplace and my wife's birthplace in a way that doesn't exactly match what's on our passports. I know that children's birth certificates are not required to be uploaded when submitting the application through the portal — but I'm still a bit unsure about two things:
1. Do I need to get the discrepancy corrected? Since the children's birth certificates aren't uploaded as part of the application, does the discrepancy even matter? Or could it cause issues down the line IF at some point I will hand over the certiicates to the government
2. Will Italy verify my children's existence with US authorities? My children are not registered in Italy — not as citizens, and not in the anagrafe either, since they were born in the US. Given that their documents aren't submitted with the application, will the Italian authorities independently check US records to confirm I actually have children?
Any experience or insight appreciated — especially from others who went through the process with children born abroad.
