[Musical] AITA for accidentally getting my best friend killed?
(OOC: it’s a movie as well, which I love, but I was specifically inspired to write this by the current London production.)
All I wanted was to protect him, but I ended up doing the opposite, and I feel like it’s all my fault.
I’ll start at the beginning. My friend (33 M) was trying to teach people to be kind to each other, which I still think is admirable. He was very charismatic, and as a result, he became a huge star, I would even say a superstar. The problem is, people basically started worshipping him, and what’s worse, I think he even started to buy into it.
He was under scrutiny from his followers (you know how unhinged people can get when it comes to celebrities), and even the state. It was starting to get dangerous, and I (30s M) kept trying to bring it up with him, but he always brushed off my concerns. I was really scared for him.
So I ended up doing the only thing I could think of to protect him. I turned him in.
I went to the authorities, and told them where he’d be. I truly thought they’d protect him. I thought they’d understand and get him help. They gave me money for telling them, but I genuinely wasn’t after the money. I just wanted to stop him from going too far and getting hurt, even if I was betraying his trust.
In the end, they had him murdered. I won’t post the details here in case I get banned, but the method was pretty brutal. They made him suffer, and murdered him, all for trying to teach people kindness. And I’m the one who betrayed him to them.
I just feel so guilty. These days, my name is practically a synonym for “traitor”, but I don’t know what else I could have done. I had no idea they’d hurt him, but is it still on my hands?
Edit: stop asking if this was an excuse for me to kiss him.
