Ai generated content and the future of harem lit
I suppose this is the elephant in the room, but I think it is time for the community to discuss AI generated content. I'm not talking AI covers for books. That may be an issue, but there is a bigger one. AI generated books.
Large Language models have gotten good enough that generating whole books is possible, and we are seeing it become a problem in real time across multiple genres. Lit RPG, fantasy, Sci Fi, all are seeing a glut of poorly written and edited books that have all the hallmarks of being generated by AI.
If it was just a few books here and there, it wouldn't be an issue, but the entire Market is being flooded with the stuff. I have Kindle Unlimited and I'm seeing that the vast majority of stuff recommended to me is AI slop. I generally can tell pretty early on when reading, but it's impossible to get away from now. It's undoubtedly people making a money grab, generating as much garbage as they can in the hopes of roping in people who see a pretty cover and an interesting premise.
This AI slop is a serious threat to genres that we all love. As the slop takes a bigger and bigger share of the Market while flooding it with poorly written garbage, the legitimate authors are at risk because not only does the slop mean their actual books get less views or people finding them, but it means that they won't make the money that they need to continue being authors. We legitimately have a potential situation where the real authors will be driven out of the market by the slop and all we will have left is the slop.
The art community has been dealing with this for a couple years now and the results have been pretty devastating.
I honestly don't have a solution, but I think that we really do need to discuss it because it's a major problem and it's only getting worse by the day.
I've startwd leaving two star reviews on AI slop. It is all I can do as an individual. I suggest others do the same.
I personally feel like there needs to be a ban on any kind of AI generated writing in this subreddit. I don't know how you enforce that, but I can tell you that a lot of the AI generated stuff is pretty obvious if you know what to look for. Unfortunately, as the large language models get better, it's going to get harder to detect.
Anyway, I hope this post doesnt break any rules. I thoroughly enjoy this genre and I'm deeply concerned about the livelyhoods of authors we all enjoy.
