I lost my job due to a brain condition, so I started a podcast. AMA.

Just like the title says, I was born with a brain condition that I think is far more common than people think. I learned how to work within my normal which was daily pain, dizziness, etc. When I hit my 30s, things got worse. I could no longer function. I finally met with a neurologist who knew what I was dealing with and finally got diagnosed. Sadly, there are no true treatments for this condition just symptom management. The medication side effects were just as bad as the condition itself. My vision became at risk as I could no longer tolerate the medication, so I needed urgent surgery. I kept my employers updated on everything and continued to do my job to the best of my ability. Sadly, they decided to let me go two weeks before I was to have surgery which put my surgery out another 6 months because I lost my health insurance. I have since gotten the surgery, but I haven't bounced back the way we had hoped I would. So I started a literary podcast to help cover medical expenses. I still have days where I struggle to speak or focus on anything, and I still have regular pain. About 20% of the people who have surgery get pain relief, and I am not one of those lucky few. That's okay though, at least I'm not blind.

I need out of my book slump!

*Before anyone asks, I am reading through other slump posts to try and get ideas as well, but I figure I can't be the only one going through a slump right now. Might as well make a post!*

I am going through a serious slump... I don't know if it is my son getting out for summer and the stress from end of school, life stress, or what, but I am struggling to follow through on picking up reading. I know if I take the time to read, it'll actually help me feel better, but I have no motivation! This has actually had a domino effect on my routine and my son's... I can't keep him excited about reading if I am not excited about reading haha. (He just started trying to read books to me guys... I really need to keep up our momentum! Plus... Reading is one of my happy places.)

Please, what are your tips and tricks to help get you over the slump and back into a great book?

I have tried reaching for some of my tried and true favorites (LOTR, Rikki Tikki Tavi, The Three Musketeers, Jane Eyre, Beatrix Potter w/kidlet, Frankenstein, Poe, Moody, etc) but even that isn't working for me. I let it go for a few weeks thinking maybe I just needed a break, and it hasn't helped.

Appreciate your help so much!

I am always on the lookout for good books to read with my family, and I didn't know my husband wasn't raised with some (most) children's stories growing up... And it is a must for me with our son. Luckily, he is a book lover! I was wondering what some of your favorite literary classics were growing up? Or what you would recommend for a family reading night aka bedtime?

I have introduced my family to Kipling: Just So Stories (currently working through these), Kipling: Rikki Tikki Tavi (even my husband loves this one!), Beatrix Potter's Little Tales, Grimm are on my list, Hans Christian Andersen is also on my list, and you kind of get the idea. I grew up reading a bit of everything, and I want my family to enjoy these stories as much as I do!

Appreciate your help!
