Hawaiian crabbing trip

We went on a trip to gather a’ama crab (thin-shelled rock crabs) for my sister and cousin’s graduation party. The best time to gather a’ama is during a full moon at low tide for safety reasons. My family has been harvesting from that coastline for generations, so we know the area very well. The group included my father, my cousin-in-law (Mike), my two cousins (Cameron and Fred), and me.

After two sweeps, we had gathered enough crabs for the party. However, Fred and Mike wanted to head back out because they had spotted a few lobsters in the tide pools. My father, Cameron, and I stayed behind by the vehicles.

While we were waiting, I saw a light at the far end of the cove. We automatically assumed it was them, but the light began moving strangely darting left, right, and then rising up over the trees. We asked each other why they would throw their flashlights away like that. Worried, Cameron and I grabbed our lights and headed out to check on them.

When we reached the area, we found Fred and Mike, but they immediately asked us why we had thrown our flashlights over the trees. They had seen the same thing and were coming to check on us for the exact same reason. We walked back to the vehicles and started talking about what we’d seen. Moments later, the light appeared again, and we were all freaked out.

Till this day we talk about this trip

My Hawaiian ghost story

I live in Pāhoa, Hawaii. This incident happened when I was eight years old. One of my chores was dumping leftovers, which I usually did on the back left hand side of our three acre property. Eventually, my mother told me to pick a new location because the smell was getting too strong.

After I changed spots, strange things began to happen. Someone would knock on my window or the walls; eventually, they even started hitting my bed. I remember running out of my room crying to wake my parents. They initially thought I was just having nightmares, but the activity continued over the next few days.

Finally, my father came into my room because he heard the knocking himself. When he looked, no one was outside, and we didn't hear the sound of anyone running away. My father called my grandmother, who came over to say a prayer and bless the house. She stayed the night and witnessed the activity herself, so we ended up sleeping in the parlor for the rest of the night.

Later, a relative who lived next door told us that the previous owner had passed away and was buried somewhere on the property. My father eventually found his tombstone right in the area where I used to dump the leftovers. We believe he wasn't trying to scare me; he was just asking for his food back.
