How did you know it was time for your THR?

I’ve had hip pain for about a month and went in to figure out what the issue was. Found out it’s arthritis in both hips (pain in just one side currently) and was told I will eventually be needing hip replacements. The unknown is weighing heavily on my mind now. I’m a fit 59yo male with no previous surgeries. I am a physical education teacher and coach so I’m on my feet most of the day. I average right around 10,000 steps per day just at work. The pain isn’t terrible but it is definitely affecting my walking gate and my ability to move normally. It’s not affecting my sleeping and sitting for the most part is OK, but I’m stiff when I get up after sitting for a while. So my question is for people here is this - How did you know it was time to get your THR done? What was the thing that made you realize that now was the time?

Any weightlifters here who have had a hip replacement?

I just found out I’ve got arthritis in both hips and will eventually be looking at hip replacements. This came out of the blue after going to the doctor because of having some pain that has lasted for several weeks and is not getting better. In doing some research, I’ve read that you shouldn’t be lifting with heavy weights after getting a hip replacement. I curious about what is considered “heavy” for people who have lifted over the majority of their life and are pretty strong pre-surgery. For reference, I’m a 59-year-old male, a high school PE teacher and Strength & Conditioning coach, and five years ago I back squatted 455 and deadlifted 505 at a body weight of just over 200 lbs. I would consider 225 for squats to be light but the average non-lifter would probably consider that very heavy. I'm wondering what other experienced lifters have found once they start training again after surgery. I’m just trying to prepare myself ahead of time for what I maybe can and cannot do, if possible. Thanks for your help!

Help needed with dried leaf & wood round project

I need some help from the experts here. I have a project and need to know the best way to do it. I have a large dried leaf and I want to place it on a flat round piece of birch that I have to make a small wall hanging. What's the best way to attach the leaf to the wood and to preserve the leaf as well? I was initially thinking shellac or lacquer. But then saw something about Mod Podge or PVA glue. Now I have no idea what to do. I only have one shot at this so I have to get it right. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Life Jacket/PFD Recommendations

Hi everyone. I’m looking for a good life jacket that is made specifically for canoeing. Obviously needs good range of motion at the shoulder and doesn’t inhibit shoulder or arm motion when paddling. Any recommendations?

Unbelievable colors tonight!

Northern Minnesota, USA. July 6, 2026. This was after a strong storm cell moved through right before sunset. It was an amazing sky!

Pink skies in northern Minnesota

Phenomenal pinks in the sky tonight! Didn’t expect this when I started paddling and the clouds not really breaking up. Glad I didn’t head back early.

Northern Minnesota - May 9

Tonight’s sunset in northern Minnesota. Some light snow flurries earlier today, but a cold sunset view was nice.
