Ok, it’s been long enough: I want to hear from the new Japanese fans!

Konnichiwa! The TV series and translated novels have been out in Japan for a while now and from the start I’ve been curious about their reception there, given the deep roots of BL culture and Shane being half Japanese and thus giving Japanese fans an extra point of interest/identification.

Let us know what you thought! Have you started reheating? Are you going to make or look for BL manga style fan art? Arigato gozaimasu!

Tips for vegetarians in South Korea?

Hello / Annyeonghaseyo!

I'll be on an 8-day trip to Seoul, Busan and Gwangju in early September and it will be my first time in South Korea. I'm very excited!

One thing that's been on my mind is the fact that I'm a strict vegetarian - not vegan, but I don't eat any meat or fish. I also don't do very well with spicy food; mild hot is fine but I avoid anything above a very light tingle in my mouth. Just to make things trickier, I'm also developing a bit of a lactose intolerance... I suspect that these things will make it challenging for me to eat while I'm there. I do plan to learn some basic words to be able to ask questions to clarify what I'm ordering (though by all means if you have vocabulary advice or, even better, printable cards to show in restaurants do please pass me some!).

Do you have any tips for what to look / ask for?

How common is it to find icons (green Vs, leaves, etc.) marking vegetarian food on menus?

And of course, do you know of good all-veggie or veggie friendly places to eat you can recommend?

Many thanks all!!!

John Rod and La Linea (Giovanni Verga?!?)

Y'all need to know about La Linea, a classic of Italian animation first appeared in 1971, created by Osvaldo Cavandoli (both pictured below).

An animated episode here:

I don't think Araki was referencing it but I can't help but think of it now...

Also and unrelated, there is a classic Italian author (of the kind that is mandatory for Italian students to learn about in high school) called Giovanni Verga (1840 – 1922), which literally translates as "John Rod" (in the "wood stick" sense, but still). Make of that what you will!
