This is “Allegory on the Death of Emperor Ferdinand III” (Vienna, c. 1660) by Daniel Neuberger — not a painting, but a wax illusion so precise it mimics bone and decay.

Ferdinand III, dead in 1657, sits as skeletons circle him in a dance of death. An hourglass marks time already spent. Above, a single word appears: “VIVIT” — he lives.

A chilling Baroque message:

Power ends. Flesh disappears.

But something… might remain.
