AITA for telling my stepsister she couldn't stay with me anymore

I'm a 20-year-old guy and my stepsister is 19. We aren't super close, but we've always gotten along.

A few weeks ago, she had a huge argument with her mom and asked if she could stay at my apartment for a few days. I felt bad for her, so I said yes without really thinking about it. My roommate agreed as long as it was temporary.

At first, everything was fine. She was quiet and respectful.

After a few days, though, she started inviting friends over without asking. I told her it was okay occasionally, but she needed to ask first because my roommate and I had work early.

She apologized.

Then she did it again.

One night I came home and there were six people in our apartment. Someone had spilled something on the carpet and one of our chairs was damaged. When I asked her about it, she said she didn't know what happened.

I got frustrated and told her she needed to find somewhere else to stay.

She started crying and said I was abandoning her when she had nowhere to go. She said she thought I actually cared about her.

That made me feel horrible because I do care about her. She's my sister, even if we're not extremely close.

But my roommate was already angry, and I couldn't keep letting people come into our apartment without permission.

She eventually left and went to stay with another relative.

Now my mom says I'm selfish and should've been more understanding because Emma was going through a difficult time.

My roommate says I was already more patient than he would've been.

I feel guilty because I know she genuinely needed help, but I also feel like I shouldn't have to sacrifice my home just because someone is struggling.

AITA?

AITA for refusing to let my stepsister stay at my place after what she did

AITA for refusing to let my stepsister stay at my place after what she did?

I’m a 20-year-old guy and my stepsister is 19. I’ll call her Mia.

For some context, our parents got married when we were younger. We’ve never really been close, but we’ve always been civil with each other. I’ve helped her out with school stuff, driven her places when our parents couldn’t, and generally tried to be a decent older brother.

A few months ago, I moved into a small apartment with one roommate. It’s nothing fancy, but I’m pretty proud of it because I’m paying for most of it myself.

Last week, Mia got into a huge argument with her mom and left the house. She called me crying and asked if she could stay at my apartment for a few days.

I felt bad, so I said yes.

The problem started almost immediately.

She basically took over the living room. Her stuff was everywhere, she was constantly having friends over, and she kept staying up really late while my roommate and I had work the next morning.

I asked her a couple times if she could keep things quieter, and she said she would.

Then yesterday, I came home and found that she had invited around six people over without asking me. There were dirty dishes everywhere, and one of them had apparently spilled something on the carpet.

I lost my temper and told her she needed to leave.

She started crying and said she had nowhere else to go. She told me I was supposed to be her brother and that she thought I actually cared about her.

That honestly made me feel horrible.

I told her I do care about her, but that doesn't mean she can treat my apartment like it's hers. She said I was being selfish and that I cared more about my carpet than I cared about her.

My mom is now angry at me too. She says Mia is already having a difficult time and that I should be more understanding.

I feel like a complete jerk because I know she's struggling, and I probably could've handled the situation better. At the same time, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect someone staying at your place to respect the rules.

I haven't talked to Mia since she left.

AITA for refusing to help my sister after she embarrassed me in front of our family?

AITA

for refusing to help my sister after she embarrassed me in front of our family?

I’m a 19M and my sister is 22F. I’m usually pretty quiet and I don’t like arguing with people, especially family.

A few weeks ago, my sister asked me to help her move some stuff into her new apartment. I agreed because she’s my sister and I figured it would only take a couple hours.

The day came and I spent basically the whole afternoon helping her. Carrying boxes, assembling furniture, cleaning up, whatever she needed. I didn’t really complain because I knew she was stressed.

Later that night we had a family dinner at my parents’ house. At some point my sister started joking about how “lazy” I am and how I apparently never help anyone.

Everyone laughed.

I just sat there because I honestly didn’t know what to say. Then she started listing things I supposedly “never do around the house.” Some of them were completely exaggerated, and a couple weren't even true.

I finally said, “You literally spent the entire afternoon asking me for help.”

She laughed and said, “Yeah, because otherwise you’d probably never do anything useful.”

That actually got to me.

I didn't argue. I just stopped talking for the rest of dinner.

A few days later she messaged me asking if I could help her again because she had some furniture that needed moving. I told her no.

She asked why, and I told her that if I'm so useless and lazy, she can ask someone else.

She got angry and said I was being childish and holding a stupid joke against her. My parents also think I'm overreacting and said I should just help because she's my sister.

Maybe they're right. It wasn't exactly a huge insult, and I probably took it more personally than I should have.

But what bothered me wasn't really the joke. It was spending hours helping someone and then having them tell everyone I'm the exact opposite.
