Relocation for same sex couples
My partner and I are considering relocating to Barbados from the UK for work and would really appreciate honest perspectives from locals, expats, or LGBT couples living there.
We’re a same sex couple and are thinking long term, including eventually having children in the US via surrogacy and raising a family.
We’ve actually travelled to Barbados many times as tourists and have always had a great experience with no issues, although we also tend to be fairly low key and not particularly into PDA. We realise though that living somewhere full time can be very different from visiting.
A few questions we’ve been wondering about:
• How LGBT friendly is Barbados in practice day to day?
• Are people generally accepting socially, even if conservative?
• Would two men together attract attention or issues publicly?
• How are international schools/local schools regarding children of same sex parents? Would bullying be a concern?
• Are there particular areas or communities that are more open minded/international?
• If one partner gets a work permit, can the other obtain a dependent visa/spousal status as a same sex spouse?
• Are foreign same sex marriages recognised for immigration purposes?
• Is there much of an LGBT community or expat network?
• Anything you think UK couples underestimate before moving?
Would really value candid answers rather than official/legal wording. Thanks in advance.
