Help with choosing first electric guitar

I’ve never played the guitar before, but I’m pretty keen on learning how to play throughout grad school (roughly 6 years). Knowing that I won’t have much money during grad school, I figure that I should invest in a solid guitar that would last that timeframe. At the same time, I feel like it would be a bad idea to spend a ton of money on the first, especially since I’m a beginner. To offer some clarity, my budget is around $1000 (again, not sure if it’s wise to spend that much, but the question is not whether I could afford it currently), and I’m pretty keen on being able to play metal/punk/shoe-gaze. I feel pretty confident that I would invest a lot of time in it, but mainly focused on it as a hobby and nothing more (maybe with the end goal of playing live or joining a band). Any advice/feedback is appreciated!
