Why do Singaporean guys fight and try so hard to get a prestigious/ high rank or role during NS?

I know I will probably get downvoted for this but I genuinely don't understand why. For context, my parents are white-collar immigrants from China, I was born and grew up here. Other than my passport which has that colour, I don't feel any attachment to a country where the only family members I have are my 2 parents and to a country which will not allow me to marry or claim certain benefits (ie bto, etc) because i am gay

Maybe that's the reason? But on a more serious note, I grew up in environments and around people who had deep, unreserved respect for one's education. Your schools that you study in, your qualifications, etc, we respected them above pretty much everything else. NS has nothing to do with it, in our eyes, to put it bluntly, who cares what you do or what rank you acheive when you're forced to do it at 20, when after that, all of us will be going to university and working towards successful, respected careers or furthering our studies towards a terminal degree. NS allowance is meagre even if you're an officer anyways

Serious post please enlighten me

Can I read NUS BEng (ChE) without H2 Math

Context: I take BCHm in Junior College (H1 Mathematics); I feel like I've pretty much decided that I want to do something related to Chemistry in university and beyond because I really like it. However, my biggest dream is to leave this country because i am gay and i suppose some countries have it better for us. (Please do not contest this point with me in the comments). I came across data which showed that chemical engineers and generally engineers are very much in demand across the world, (that is if you have a masters in an engineering discipline) especially in countries like Germany, as opposed to Chemistry graduates, who would typically need a PhD to be in a favourable position to enter the job market, especially in western countries.

What can I do? I suppose that if I read a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry at NUS CHS I can use my 48 units of unrestricted electives to take engineering modules to possibly qualify myself for entry into MSc Chemical Engineering programmes at German universities like TU Munich? Should I do a CDE-CHS DDP in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering if I go to NUS? Or based on my subject combination there are other careers that I can do to make it easier to relocate lol. + as i mentioned im gay please recommend a faculty which also has good looking guys

Thank you

Edit: or should i study chem eng at SIT-TUM because that doesnt have a math requirement

where can i study both chemistry and law in university

I am in JC. As the title suggests, I want to read a double degree programme in university and i think it would be really interesting to read both a science and an art degree. I feel like law would be really interesting to study but I don't want to have my sights set on law because i read about how law is an incredibly cutthroat profession and the turnover rate is considerably high. At the same time, i love chemistry. I know I might be at odds with many at this age but I'd love to read a science degree with law to broaden my options for furthering my studies and as I mentioned, i love chemistry.

I know you could do this at NUS through student-initiated DDPs but other than NUS, what other universities could I do this? Similarly, will I be able to manage the workload? Thank you

RVHS (JC) administration sucks and runs this school like we're still undergoing puberty

let me preface this by saying that im already having a bad day and this is a fly in the ointment in an otherwise sorry state of affairs. While the scholars in hwa chong are enraged over 10:30am and 11:30am, here we are between 12pm and 1pm. for context we used to only be able to leave the school at 1pm earliest and at the start of the term the college administration shifted it forward to 12pm. we loved the school for once. today a good handful of us were stopped abruptly by the security guards who told us that the dismissal time has reverted back to 1pm

why didnt they just make an upfront announcement to the college section about this?? the lack of transparency is infuriating. not to mention a whole bunch of other rules. apparently the secondary school section teachers complained to the college teachers that the jc students were setting a bad example for the IP side because the college students were wearing earrings. what?

how much does portfolio really matter

so im in a mid tier jc and they keep on stressing about the importance of building up a portfolio and universities would look at you beyond the grades that you have. how true would the following scenarios be?

  1. A gets 70rp. A doesn't have a decent portfolio because he spent his entire jc life mugging but maybe he was a class chairperson and has 1 cca, idk. He applies to a course at a university with a 10th pctl IGP below 70rp. (eg: 90th pc: 70rp, 10th pc: 68rp). Will he get chosen and/or accepted by the university as opposed to somebody with 69rp but an amazing beautiful portfolio?
  2. That being said, B spent much of his jc life building a beautiful portfolio. His grades struggle because he can't give enough time to it, so he got 67.67 rp for As. However, he has a strikingly beautiful portfolio. He uses ABA to apply to the aforementioned course. (IGP: 10th pc 68rp, 90th pc 70rp). Will he get in?
  3. With the above examples, would it be correct to say that portfolio merely acts as a safety net for you to get your choices in university, because it is an open secret that not everybody will get 70rp? Or in my school, only around 25-45% of the cohort gets 70rp, there's essentially a 55-75% chance that one wouldn't get 70rp, so they're encouraging us to use portfolio to compensate for grades?

Edit: barring competitive courses like med, law, or dentistry, im referring to courses where the 10th pc and 90th pc igp are not 70rp and 70rp respectively

hi h2 chem seniors so i've been studying chem ahead of time, i understand the tutorial questions and answers are pretty much the same if not entirely similar every year and the chem department uploads them on sls periodically over 2 years, for discussion qn answers in the tutorial they only upload it after the entire cohort has finished tutorials on that particular chapter

that said if any of yall happen to have the answers and everything in pdfs would it be ok if u dm me and send it? for self-check qns or lecture notes too, bc ive been doing ahead of time. thank you i really appreciate
