Ankoman and that one cosplayer have done irreparable damage to Astolfo’s image
If human beings are capable of endlessly redefining morality around themselves, what standard exists outside human opinion to determine whether an act is actually good or evil?
Throughout history, humanity has repeatedly rewritten its moral codes. Practices once considered virtuous became condemned. Acts once condemned became celebrated. Entire civilizations believed their customs were enlightened, righteous, and justified, only for later generations to view them as barbaric or corrupt.
Yet every age speaks with certainty.
The conqueror claims necessity.
The revolutionary claims justice.
The tyrant claims order.
The hedonist claims freedom.
The zealot claims righteousness.
The consumer claims comfort.
The society claims progress.
All believe themselves reasonable.
But if morality is only constructed by humans, then no civilization can truly call another evil in any objective sense. One culture may dislike another’s actions, but dislike is not the same thing as moral authority.
Without a standard above humanity itself, condemnation becomes difficult to justify consistently. On what basis could one declare:
Slavery evil,
Genocide evil
Torture evil
Exploitation evil
except by saying:
“We personally reject these things”?
