I hate the Star Wars derived media poster
Alt title: I hate the Star Wars poster format.
Almost all media posters/covers are very generic and meaningless, but whenever I see covers in this particular stylistic format, it irks me. I know Star Wars didn't start it and I'm not saying that using this format is definitely cribbing it, but I think the use of this format belies an underlying lack of creative direction in the media project. It's trying to project 'epicness' sans any artistic distinctiveness of the work itself.
With Star Wars the format works because both the format and the content of the original SW movies is a reference to aesthetics of earlier science-fantasy Sword and Planet books, there's an artistic connection, it isn't just constructed to try and look good. To paraphrase Peter Griffin: it works because it looks like what it is. But it seems that most of the time this format is used, it's only to squish an ensemble onto the cover.
