Update : Perspective needed: should I just let my in-laws take my daughter for “a night or two”?

Hi guys,

Just a quick update. I thought I’d give those who speculated that my daughter was coached by her grandparents the satisfaction 😉

So this morning while walking my daughter to school I asked her how she got the idea of going to granny and grandad’s for the summer vacations. Her reply: “well granny and grandad said I could come!”. So I said, “oh, it wasn’t your idea?”. “No, granny and grandad said I could come for the summer vacations. I’m allowed right?”

Nothing surprising. But I’m going to have a conversation with my husband about this. Between coaching her and then trying to manipulate us to think it was her idea I’m rather pissed.

Thinking back to this weekend, MIL kept trying to be very hands on with our daughter. Tucking in her shirt, telling us “she needs a cardigan to go out!!” (No shit lady!), then taking over to button up her cardigan… Small things but I think she was trying to demonstrate that she could look after her…

Anyway: you all guessed right 😁

Perspective needed: should I just let my in-laws take my daughter for “a night or two”?

Hi all,

I’m trying to be rational about this situation and I’m tired of always feeling like the bad guy. So for context:

I have a civil relationship with my in-laws. We are polite to each other but if it was not for my husband, they are just not people I would choose to socialise with. They’ve been unpleasant in the past and I hold them at arms length. They’ve learnt to not over step too much and we just keep things surface level and polite.

We have two girls: a 5 year old with ASD. And a 2 year old. Our 5 year old is a very intelligent and lively little girl. But she can struggle with certain situations especially when tired and/or overstimulated. She has almost never slept a full night alone. She was almost there for a while but regressed about 6 months ago and currently won’t sleep without my husband next to her on a mattress on the floor next to her bed. I used to be the one sleeping with her. But since her sister was born we switched.

She also won’t use the toilet. She says it scares her and will only use a potty. She will use the tiny toilets at school but we still have frequent accidents. And there are periods when even at home we have two or three accidents a day.

She’s also prone to meltdowns that can start without warning and are pretty hard to diffuse. Those are some of the reasons she has never been away from us for a night.

This Saturday my in-laws were over for lunch. After lunch MIL, FIL and my husband when out to the park with our 5 year old while I put our 2 year old down for a nap. A few hours later they come home and my husband says daughter wants to go to her grandparents during the summer vacation. MIL jumps in says how they will come pick her up in the morning, they take her to the zoo. And then home to their place “for a night or two”. She goes on with other ideas of things they’ll do with her.

And I’m just trying to remain calm and not overreact but I feel really weird about this announcement. Like it’s all decided before I’ve even had a conversation with my husband about it. They have never looked after her alone, even for a few hours. They live two hours away from us so this just seems insane. Plus, they’ve never really accepted the ASD diagnosis and often say things suggesting we are either exaggerating or just not firm enough with her.

My husband sheepishly says “it’s daughter who asked. What was I to say?” She’s 5 ffs, she doesn’t understand what she just asked for. MIL goes “there’s no reason for anything to go wrong.” So i reply “there’s plenty of reasons for this to go wrong !”

They left soon after (probably because they could sense I was pissed). I explained to my husband that felt ambushed by the announcement and would have preferred a discussion between the two of us instead of his mother telling me their plans like it’s a done deal. He gets defensive and says “what was I supposed to say? Daughter brought it up?” I say they’ve never looked after her and don’t realise what they’re in for, that maybe we should start with an afternoon or a day outing. He says he tried to tell them but they say it’s fine.

I’m just so annoyed. I know how they are. They are going to act like this is just going to happen and I get to be the bad guy if it doesn’t.

Is it me? Am I overreacting? Am I being unfair?
