What’s your Ural origin story?

How did you get here? Ill start.

My first bike was a BMW R65LS and I was totally obsessed with it. I admired the simplicity of the opposed twin and paired with the historical aspect of a long running proven design… I was intrigued.

I ended up looking for a R100 but could never quite pull the trigger on one I liked. I ended up bumping up to a BMW K100RS and while it was amazing it just didn’t have the charm of the boxer. Eventually I started my family and the life on two wheels felt like an unnecessary risk. I sold off the K100RS and went without nothing for a good 5 years.

I had randomly seen a Ural pass by me at a stop light one day and a flood of memories came rushing in. I had seen these bikes in movies, I had seen them in Eastern Europe, I had seen them in WW2 reenactments and I caved for something I was always curious about.

I had eventually decided to order one new for a road trip out to Colorado with some friends. They had gone and convinced me to ride trails intended for lifted jeeps and land cruisers so while they outfitted vehicles for a place I didn’t live, I instead chose to pickup something i could still use back home. Needless to say my choice surprised them and I’ve been loving my purchase ever since.

Additional Subreddit Updates

Building on the momentum...

Trailing on some of the updates from u/thisdodobird

  • Reduction of rules.
    • While some of these rules were in place for a good long while, alot of them go without saying. We also don't have enough traffic to warrant some of them. Keeping it light for now but some might appear in the future if needed.
  • Visual Tweaks
    • We only got a few complaints about eye strain but thats all it takes. Neutral tones work for everyone. To this end the banner and logo has also been replaced and sized correctly.
  • Flair remains, but its no longer a requirement.
    • Dodo will probably beat me senseless but most users just want to post and not worry about tagging something appropriately. The tags remain but are merely a suggestion.
  • Sidebar Tweaks
    • I've added some resource links for riders new and old included a very obvious miss of linking out to Soviet Steeds. I think it goes without saying that the forum is a priceless treasure trove of knowledge and experience for the last 16 years. I've linked out to ADVRider for the same reasons.
    • I've also added some additional related communities for those who need some guidance on where info might lay elsewhere.

I'd like to talk a bit about community engagement. It's no secret that we are a fringe group in a big motorcycle world. Our uniqueness and dedication are unparalleled. To that end I am open to suggestions of all kinds from the users so that we can build this up a bit.

  • What are your thoughts on rotating out a ride of the month each month to be shown on the sidebar?
  • We've had inconsistency in allowing but also removing sales posts. What's the feel here? I find them beneficial provided its not spam especially with the current state of the original Ural being discontinued for sake of the Neo.
