Accidentally turned my gf USB into a Windows installer – any hope of recovering her bachelor files?
My girlfriend had a 115GB Kingston USB drive containing around 4GB of important university/bachelor documents (mostly Word, PDF, power points, Excel files).
I accidentally used the USB with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool to create a Windows 11 installation USB. I didn’t realize it would fully format/overwrite the drive.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Recuva (deep scan)
- PhotoRec
PhotoRec recovered ~1000 files, but almost everything appears to be Windows installation files (Edge files, fonts, etc.). I can’t find any DOCX/PDF/XLSX files so far.
The USB is also now labeled “ESD-USB” and has the Windows installer on it.
Questions:
- Is there still any realistic chance of recovering the original documents?
