When a manager delegates manager duties to a coworker (rant)

I’m kinda frustrated at my current job (which I thought would be my dream job). I left my last job because it was toxic, full of hypocrites and I was getting paid peanuts.

Now I earn more and, like everyone, I need the money, but I’m being constantly getting condescension from a coworker who has a rather codependent relationship with my boss.

My boss obviously trusts this other person and at times it feels like it’s my coworker who runs the show. I’m a professional and do my job well, but it’s the story of my life that I find these characters over and over again, whether it’s the sacred cows, the protégée, the semi-sapphic and unprofessional relationship between bosses and employees, the cliques. It makes me hate humanity.

Yes, my boss is not a bully, but this is the classic boss that’s been there for a long time and is a weak leader, passively making money, while the coworker is her “bestie” who is trying to “teach” me how to do my job. Calling me on Teams to “explain” things to me… like, bitch, you are not my boss. Anyway, I’m annoyed. Should I just keep my goals in sight and do a passive job as well or should I begin looking to jump the boat?

I’m wondering if someone has any strategies to “make it” in this environment without going crazy. I feel disrespected as a professional constantly by these two, who on top of it are passive aggressive. I ignore passive aggressive comments generally, but I’m wondering if I’m just reaffirming the notion that people can walk over me.
