We got got in San Miguel
I'm usually pretty good about playing off the people advertising tours and whatnot. We're staying at Fiesta Americana and they gave us the wristbands. Well apparently that made us a target for a tactic I wasn't expecting. Walking through Benito Juarez park, a guy came up to us and goes 'Hey Fiesta Family!' I go to brush him off but he goes 'Its me, your waiter!' which threw me for a loop. He was an older middle age guy like a bunch of the wait staff at FA but I couldn't quite place him as one of the ones we had, having only been there 2 days at the time.
So not to be rude, I stopped to interact with him. It makes sense the staff could have second jobs with the tour companies, I thought. He pulled us over and started going through his tours and car rentals, things we did want to do. He discounted things from the marked up prices on his little pamphlet, but screwed us on the conversion back and forth, working in Pesos, converting that to dollars at 16/1 then back to pesos at 20/1 with a 16$ of 'taxes' and a 5% 'credit card fee'.
All in all we probably overpaid, but for a rental car for a day (WITH AC!) and a 2 people for a 4 hour tour the next day to El Cielo, Palancar, and El Cielito with copious amounts of beer and a great crew on the boat, we were charged $250 US. The car showed up and the tour was great.
Anyway, I knew we got got when some punk kid I've never seen before tries to get me in his cigar shop with the same line "Hey I'm your waiter" and we realize its a bit. A bit that worked so I'll give them that. If you're in San Miguel and staying at an AI w/ the wristbands, watch out for people claiming to know you.
