Giardia- How Common?

I picked up a dachshund puppy a few weeks ago. He had his first shots at 8 weeks and I picked him up at the end of the week. Breeder said his litter had diarrhea but she had sent for it to be tested.

We picked up puppy and had him for the weekend. He has a few soft poos but no diarrhea. Found out on Monday he tested positive for Giardia. He also had an ear infection. Breeder said when he was at the vet earlier in the week his ears were fine. Maybe if you have a lot of puppies you get nose blind but he was very stinky even though she said she had bathed him. We just figured he had been with other puppies etc and that was why he was stinky.

I thought I had done my research and found a decent breeder. My vet was skeptical. But said that giardia does happen when you have a lot of dogs in one place.

So my question is how common is it for your puppies to have this? Vet said it can be hard to get rid of once it is in the environment.

Both puppy and older dog have gone through one round of treatment and puppy shows no signs of it but older dog has diarrhea. So probably back to vet on Monday.

Also if you have any tips on how/ what to clean to make sure no reinfection.

Anxiety about new dog

I have had three reactive JRT/dachshunds for 16 years.

They are much better when they are walked singly and such was the advice of my trainer but life being what it is and their energy level being what it is this wasn’t always possible. I have spent many years dodging people and dogs off trail, planning escape routes, walking them at 5 in the morning so we have the trail to ourselves.

Can’t take them to a patio or anywhere there might be another dog.

Recently the third one died and am contemplating a new puppy - a dachshund.

I’m a bit paranoid about having another reactive dog! I have researched the parents, particularly the mother to make sure she is not anxious. But is it really just a crap shoot? How best can I set this up for success?

There are some things I will do differently - no doggy daycare, only a select few dog friends who are calm.

I have noticed the girls are not nearly as reactive now that their brother has passed. I guess now I know who the main trouble maker was. 😂 I’ve never really know how much of their large personalities is due to JRT DNA or how much dachshund. Most purebred dachshunds I have encountered are several notches dialled down from what I am used to.

Dog Illness and Behaviour of Other Family Dogs

I have 3 elderly 15/16 year old JRT/Dachshunds.

The other night one of them kept us up half the night coughing. Brought him to vet yesterday and it's looking like congestive heart failure. Fortunately, my vet who had actually left for the day, came back in specifically to look at him. He's on some meds now and hoping he feels a bit better soon.

Here is the kind of weird thing - as soon as he starts a coughing spell, his sister takes one look at him and quickly exits the room. She normally sleeps in our bedroom and last night she slept downstairs with her older sister (they are normally cordial, but not exactly "friends").

I swear she thinks it is hantavirus.

She has been behaving really clingy (aside for quick exits) and very odd.

Anyone with similar experience?
