European Expat in Australia
Hi everyone,
I’m a bit lost regarding my tax/investment situation as a French expat living in Australia, and I’d really appreciate feedback from people who may have been in a similar situation.
I moved to Australia 2 years ago originally just for traveling, so I honestly didn’t prepare my expatriation properly from a financial/tax perspective. In particular, I never opened a PEA before leaving France. I’m now an Australian tax resident and I recently resigned from my French company.
I currently have an employee savings account with Natixis Interépargne that has been open since 2019 (profit-sharing, employee contributions, capital gains, etc.).
What I’m struggling to understand is:
- If I withdraw the money now after resigning, which country actually taxes it?
- Is it only French taxation?
- Or can Australia also tax the withdrawal since I’m now an Australian tax resident?
- I’ve read that early withdrawal after termination of employment can be exempt from French income tax, but I don’t fully understand what may still apply (social contributions, Australian taxation, etc.).
- I’ve also heard that in Australia, capital gains held for more than 12 months may benefit from a tax discount, so I’m wondering whether it could be smarter to keep the funds invested longer before withdrawing.
My second question is about long-term investing.
Since I never opened a PEA, I’m now looking for the best way to invest mainly in ETFs as an expat. One important point for me is that I would like to keep my funds in EUR and ideally keep my money in France/Europe rather than transferring everything to Australia.
So I’d love feedback from people regarding:
- brokers available to Australian tax residents;
- investing in ETFs in EUR while living abroad;
- France/Australia tax implications;
- and whether some expats have managed to maintain a “European” investment strategy while being Australian tax residents.
Any advice, personal experiences, broker recommendations, or expat tax specialists would be hugely appreciated 🙏
