Experience driving with caravan
So, last weekend we finally got to try hauling our caravan with the Buzz. I was especially curious about the range, since we have a relatively small caravan. Our buzz is rated to pull 1600kg (LWB GTX), with our caravan weighing 1500kg when fully loaded. I consistently drive 90 km/h.
We started our trip with 90% charge near Ski, close to Oslo, Norway. We drove down to Grebbestad in Sweden, which was about 150km away. It was raining all the time, but little headwind. The trip itself was very smooth, with both the Buzz and caravan being very stable and nice to drive, especially with the driving assistent, and the consumption was around 36kW/100km, which I thought was on the high side. We were actually going to continue our trip further south, but had 16% charge left near Grebbestad. At this point we decided to charge but made the fatal mistake of not planning ourself where we were going to charge, so got sent to some shoppingmall where we had to disconnect the caravan and fight for a spot, which wasn't great. It was then that we decided on not driving much further.
On the way back we started our trip with just over 90% charge again but no rain. We also turned down the heat a little bit, from 20 to 17 degree celcius, which seemed to affect the consumption and range dramatically, reaching home with about 35% charge left with a consumption of just 30kW/100km. So I think that I could have driven about 200km before absolutely having to charge, possible even a little further.
So we learned many things this trip, and hope to be better prepared for when we go on holiday inside Norway this summer.
