Fanservice In Anime/Manga.

Since Twitter is bitching about it right now ,I figured we should too.

For those who don't know, there basically the youth doesn't want fanservice anymore: since most, if not all of us are adults here, I figured I'd see what ya'll think.

now, Maria's Judgement/Maria No Danzaii is an interesting series for this because while there IS fanservice to an extent, it is very mild (most of it is honestly just Maria's shapely breasts, which are just kinda THERE rather than any real focus put on them) and never gets in the way of the very serious story it's trying to tell about a mother seeking revenge for her son's murder. Needless to say, this series is not supposed to turn you on (even the bit with the principal is meant to be repulsive rather than sexy for the simple fact that he's ugly and she's not at all enjoying it) and that is a fantastic thing I give the creator full credit for...but we've all seen other anime/manga. This is not our first exposer to the realm of Japanese cartoons (at least I assume it isn't. If this somehow IS your first time: welcome! You picked a fantastic place to start!) so we've ALL seen been exposed to various levels of fanservice over the years.

So the question remains: do you like fanservice? Is it something that you enjoy seeing or do you see it an annoying or even harmful concept that Japanese artist should start pulling back a little from, if not eliminate entirely?

My personal stance is that fanservice is fine so long as it's done WELL and most importantly, is done in a way that isn't totally objectifying your characters as just sex objects. Maria's Judgment does a perfect job at this: Maria is absolutely sexy but she's a lot more than that and there is a lot to respect about her (her intelligence, her love for her son, her skills in combat, her care for her husband's safety, her unwillingness to harm innocents in her quest for revenge ect) so yeah she's a hot MILF but you don't SEE her as that when you're reading the series because there is just so much more to her than that. I also believe that too much fanservice has caused fans to become dangerously desensitized as the normalization of it can absolutely warp the mind and at best can cause someone to have a warped sense of reality and relationships and at worse cause them to actually commit horrible crimes because they have been told that their personal lust is something they are entitled to have catered to.

So what do ya'll think? Kind of a serious topic for a place like this but fuck it: everyone needs to think deeply about things once in a while so might as well start here.
