Starting an FNP program at a state school only to find out it’s online.

I’m so upset that I’m tempted to leave this program before it starts next week. I opted out of a few of the more “prestigious” schools because I DID NOT want to get my education online, instead choosing a state school located 20 minutes away from my house.

Today I find out that pretty much all of the coursework is online with the exception of a few days each semester. Apparently we’re going to be recording ourselves doing assessments remotely and hell, we can even use our own dog as a patient if we don’t have a person available.

I’m so mad right now. I could’ve been re-doing pre-reqs for PA school instead of focusing on this application. But now I’ve wasted time and feel stuck.

ER to culture all foleys

I was just informed today that we are now going to be culturing all foleys on patients coming in through the ED. If the physician forgets to order a urine culture, the nurse is to send a sample and remind them to order it. This new policy comes from nursing management after a small increase in cautis.

Now, I know most people with long term indwelling catheters have bacterial colonization that does not require any treatment. I’m worried that this new policy will contribute to antibiotic overuse and increase patient costs. Is this something worth speaking up about? I really like my job, but this doesn’t seem right.
