Has anyone had this symptom pattern after vanco?

Okay here is my story to date. Got c diff after cefixime for a UTI. Was on four days of Flagyl and it was giving me crazy side effects so the doctor switched me to Vancomycin. Finished that course a week ago (Friday) and was feeling totally great.

Then on Tuesday at midday, I randomly got chills and proceeded to have a bunch of Bristol 5-6 stools over the rest of the day into the night. Got a fever. Went to ER at midnight and got an IV. By morning I was feeling much better without further treatment. They did a stool sample while I was there was was negative for toxins, positive for PCR.

Because I was feeling better, fever resolved, was having more formed stools, my doctor said we should wait and see what happens next before restarting Vanco because it could make everything worse if I don't have c diff. We are going to touch base next week. An additional factor is that my mum has a stomach bug and my doctor thought I might have caught that.

Today (Friday), I have started having loose BMs again, not totally watery, but Bristol 6 with lots of mucus and maybe hints of blood. Also some tenesmsus. I had about 3 BMs first thing in the morning and then another loose one in the afternoon.

It has crossed my mind that maybe it isnt c diff anymore, but that my colon is particularly rundown and irritated and struggling to recover for some reason. Do I maybe need to get checked for an underlying condition like IBD before restarting Vanco?

Wondering if anyone has any experience with a similar pattern.

Thanks!

Ps - taking a break from Florastor and BioK+ today just to rule those out as irritants. I might have been pushing my gut too hard. Will see if that helps.

Pps - not sure if relevant, but the day I started to feel better I also started my period, like 4 days earlier than expected.

Symptoms 5 days post Vanco

Hi everyone,

I finished my week of Vanco 5 days ago (my doctor switched me from Flagyl to Vanco midway through). I felt great on the Vanco and for the first 5 days after. Then today I randomly had a very loose stool, nausea and feeling like a cold or flu is coming on. Has anyone else experienced this with Vanco? I am also still taking Florastor and Biok+ and wondering if those might be causing the stomach issues. Very much hoping it isnt a recurrence.

Thanks!

Diarrhea Recurrence on Flagyl?

Hi again,

I (33F) am now on day 5 of Flagyl. My doctor prescribed it after a night of severe cramping and diarrhea and a positive toxin test. Vanco isnt funded in my jurisdiction unless Flagyl fails first.

I will say the symptoms were already getting better on their own before I started the Flagyl, probably because I had just finished the offending UTI antibiotic.

Days 1-3 of the Flagyl were great, stools more formed, no more cramping. However, on day 4 I woke up with severe anxiety and some fatigue and a return of Bristol 6 stools frequently throughout the day with yellow mucus - maybe 6 or 7 BMs total, more concentrated in the morning. I still haven't had a return of the cramping.

At this point, I am wondering if the return of loose stools points to just Flagyl side effects or if it means the Flagyl is failing. It may be impossible to know and therefore safer to have my doctor switch me to Vanco if I can convince her. But I also hate the idea of a new course of antibiotics all over again if it isnt actually necessary.

I have a call with my doctor tomorrow morning so I am basicallly wondering if anyone else had this pattern of diarrhea on Flagyl and what the outcome was for you. Thanks so much!

Yellow Mucus

Hi there,

Sorry if this is TMI but I am on day 3 of antibiotics for a fairly mild case of c. diff. It was getting better on its own after 12 hours but the doctor gave me antibiotics anyway to be safe. I am also on 1 mg Florastor per day and BioK+. The diarrhea has largely stopped and now I am having a few very soft brown stools a day, but I've noticed there are also blobs of thick pale yellow mucus mixed in with every stool, and sometimes even when I am not having a bowel movement. Has anyone else had this? Is it a sign of the body just sloughing off dead cells from the colon or something? Or is it something to be concerned about? Otherwise I feel fine. No cramping or anything.

Thanks!

New here

Hi everyone,

Last week I got a UTI and the emergency doc gave me Cefixime as an antibiotic, a 7 day course. On day 7 of the course (this past Wednesday night) I started having terrible menstrual like stomach cramps and watery diarrhea throughout the night. The next morning I called the doctor and was sent for a stool test. While waiting for the results, I noticed I had been feeling much better over the course of the day. Last night, I slept through the night without any diarrhea or cramps. This morning I did have some watery stool still, but not nearly as frequent as the first night of symptoms. The cramping has subsided significantly too (basically just gas cramps for 30 seconds every few hours). But surprisingly, the stool sample came back positive for c difficile toxins. I have a call with my doctor in an hour to discuss treatment.

I suppose I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience? From what I have read, I should probably still get a full course of antibiotics, but I am scared that Vanco will wipe out my gut and cause a recurrence that wouldnt have happened otherwise (I.e. if my gut is currently fighting the infection off on its own). If anyone has any advice or similar experience, I would really appreciate it.

As a side note, I had a stillbirth in March and will likely need surgery this year to fix my cervix, and then I will want to try again for a baby. Just in case that impacts anyone's analysis on the treatment questions.

Thanks all!
