[Solution] Steam Input makes fps drop / using a controller lowers fps for games (Metaphor Re Fantazio using Crossover)
I decided to make this post because somebody might be googling this exact problem and I've been wondering what I was doing wrong and why my game was dropping FPS the moment I wanted to use a controller as opposed to mouse+keyboard
My problem: Metaphor Re Fantazio, while playing the game with mouse and keyboard I was getting a solid 60fps, but when I tried to use a controller it would drop to 45-55 fps with uneven frame pacing.
Specs: Macbook Pro M1 Max 32gb RAM, macOS 26.5.1
Used controller: Dualsense (PS5) and Xbox Series X/S controller
Solution:
- DISABLE Steam Input for your specific game or disable it completely on Steam (this one might make your PS5 controller not register inputs)
- Go to your bottle in Crossover
- In the control panels go to "Game Controllers"
- ENABLE "disable hidraw" (this will make your PS5 controller to register inputs again, as a Xbox controller)
- Optionaly: in the game's settings disable "v sync" to reduce input lag (it helped at least in Metaphor Re Fantazio).
Im leaving this post here, because from what I've googled, people are somewhat aware that Steam Input might cause input delay when using controllers, but in this case when gaming on Mac via Crossover, for me (at least in this game) it was also causing a massive FPS drops. I don't think anybody before has made a post about it before so I hope it helps somebody in the future because it was a pain in the ass figuring it out (googling "controller makes the game drop fps mac crossover" didnt give me any results lol, only AI was somewhat helpful with trying to navigate me)
