Did Apple’s 32-bit cutoff actually hurt Mac gaming that much?
Do you think macOS dropping support for 32-bit applications was ultimately a good decision?
I know it killed compatibility with a lot of older Mac games, but it seems like most regular apps eventually got updated to 64-bit anyway. And Mac gaming is still getting new releases today, so I’m wondering how much the 32-bit cutoff actually hurt Mac gaming as a whole.
Was it really a major setback for Mac gaming, or was it mostly just a problem for people trying to play older/abandoned games?
Would love to hear what you guys think.
Should I buy the 13" MacBook Air M5 (24GB/512GB) for ₹1,73,900 (1,819$)mainly for gaming + coding + AI?
I’m considering buying this exact configuration:
13" MacBook Air — M5 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU 24GB unified memory 512GB SSD Wi-Fi 7 / Thunderbolt 4 Price: ₹1,73,900 (1,819$)
My main use case would be a mix of gaming, coding and AI-related work.
For gaming, I’d like to play games such as ARK, Dying Light 1/2/The beast, Resident Evil games, Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, GTA V, and other similar AAA games.
Ideally, I'm looking for around 40–60 FPS on medium-to-high settings, depending on the game. I don't expect every game to hit 60 FPS, but I'd like to know whether this machine can realistically deliver that kind of performance in the games I'm interested in.
For coding, I’ll be using it normally for development/programming, and I’m also interested in doing AI/ML-related work. The 24GB unified memory is one of the reasons I'm considering this configuration.
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who actually own this exact M5 24GB/512GB model and have tried gaming on it

Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days 1.0 release trailer!
According to the LinkedIn post they will be keeping it Mac Verified!
I'm making a game developed on mac and it's releasing soon on Steam :)
Hey y'all, I'm a solo dev working on the cozy sandbox game Clickonomy. It's a game about collecting resources on a tiny planet and selling them to earn a lot of money :) I've been developing this on a Mac. The captured footage comes from a M4 Pro Mac mini, the game should also do quite well on base M1 (at lower resolution tho - only Apple Silicon). You can wishlist the game on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3284800/Clickonomy

007 FirstLight shader issue seems fixed
In my situation MacBook Air M5 15 inch 24G, CrossOver 26.3 + MacOS 27 beta6 + GPTK4 beta 2. The annoying shader compile issue is gone, now the shader compile finishes normally and no memory leak is found. I think it's fixed by MacOS 27 beta6, because last time I tried on 27 beta 5 it's not fixed. Or perhaps just the game itself updated.
I finished the first chapter, with all low settings + balanced dlss, the frame rate is between 24 to 40, it's not good, and the sound is glitching. With frame gen on the frame rate is stable above 40, but input is still lagging and sound is glitching too.
Perhaps someone can try 007 to see if the shader issue is really fixed and the framerate is better or not.
TLoU Pt II working great on M4 Pro with Crossover!
Apple MacBook Pro M4 Pro, 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 48GB RAM, 512GB SSD. Crossover 26.3.
Xbox to Mac Studio (2022)
Hey, I’ve been searching for a solution on the internet as well as Reddit but could not find anything conclusive on how to do it. Most of the guides were from 2023 as well so maybe there are better solutions. Wondering if anybody had made it work.
I need 60 FPS and ideally 4K as some mentioned they managed to do it only in 1080p or without native audio from the monitor speakers.
Thanks!
Feel like I am starting to get that old school dungeon crawler feel
Dinosaur Planet now runs natively on Apple Silicon Mac, iPhone, and iPad
Hey r/macgaming. I released DinoPad today, an Apple port of Dinosaur Planet: Recompiled for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
If you have ever wanted to experience the original Star Fox Adventures before it became the GameCube game, this is it. Dinosaur Planet is Rare’s unreleased N64 adventure, with hours of story, exploration, puzzles, and combat. Most people have never played it, and it is genuinely worth experiencing.
None of this starts with me. Dinosaur Planet: Recompiled created the native port, while DinoMod Enhanced and the wider preservation and decompilation community restored the game and fixed progression blockers. DinoPad brings that work to Apple devices.
It now runs natively through Metal and plays great on iPhone and iPad, with touch controls, controller support, saves, and on-device setup. The Apple Silicon Mac version supports keyboard, mouse, and controllers. This is not emulation or streaming.
The video was recorded on a physical iPad running the Restored development version. The public 0.1.0 release currently contains Prototype Mode only because I am not distributing DinoMod Enhanced without permission.
For transparency, I used Codex with Sol 5.6 as a coding assistant to help finish the Apple port.
The repository includes the source, Mac build instructions, and an unsigned IPA for iPhone and iPad. No game data is included.
This is an unofficial community project and is not affiliated with Nintendo, Rare, Microsoft, or the upstream projects.

Mortal Shell II (UE5) crashes on in-game video playback under CrossOver/D3DMetal — D3D12 Video / AGX shader limit? Everything else works
Setup:
- MacBook Pro, Apple M5, 16 GB, macOS 27.0 (beta)
- CrossOver 26.3 patched with CXPatcher (26.3p0.7.1)
- GPTK 4.0b2 / D3DMetal, backend = d3dmetal, D3DM_ENABLE_METALFX=1, D3DM_MTL4=1
- Game installed to a normal bottle; DLSS→MetalFX works fine in Diablo IV, so my GPTK/DLSS setup is correct.
The problem:
Mortal Shell II runs PERFECTLY on D3DMetal — until any in-game .mp4 plays
(intro, tutorial "shell" clips, cutscenes). The video shows as a black box,
audio plays for a couple seconds then distorts, then the game hard-crashes.
Crash signature (from Saved/Crashes/.../CrashContext.runtime-xml):
- EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION reading 0x0
- Faulting thread: RHIThread, with ElectraPlayer::Video decoder / MP4 streamer
threads active
- RHI.RHIName = D3D12, RHI.AdapterName = "AMD Compatibility Mode"
So UE's Electra decodes the mp4, hands the frame to the D3DMetal RHI, and it
null-derefs on the render thread. Looks like D3DMetal's Direct3D 12 Video path
(the game ships its own DX12 Agility SDK / D3D12Core.dll). I also see
"AGX: exceeded compiled variants footprint limit" in the wine console.
DXVK avoids the crash (runs the game in DX11, no D3D12 Video path) but the DX11
renderer has heavy blocky artifacts, so it's not really usable.
What I've already tried (all no change):
- Deleting/renaming the Content/Movies .mp4s (they're inside .pak/.utoc, no effect)
- Disabling winegstreamer / forcing software decode
- Native Media Foundation via HoodedDeath/mf-fix (full MS MF DLLs + overrides + MFTs)
- Removing the bundled DX12 Agility SDK (Binaries/Win64/D3D12)
- DXMT backend → renders only the UI, black 3D world
- Confirmed a healthy GStreamer stack (had a broken manual patch, fixed it) — still crashes
- Verified it's not decode: audio decodes, H.264 plugins present; the crash is on the
D3DMetal render/present side.
- Has anyone gotten UE5 games that use D3D12 hardware video decode / Electra to play
in-game videos under D3DMetal without crashing?
- Is there a known way to force Electra off the D3D12 video path (a cvar / Engine.ini
[ConsoleVariables] entry) so it uses a plain CPU texture?
- Any workaround for the AGX "compiled variants footprint limit" with D3DMetal?
