"Be careful, there are kids here"

I'm still dumbfounded by an experience I had the other day and I need to rant. lol

My friend (H) and I were on the subway, just chatting normally. I do admit H can speak a little bit loud, especially with all the background noise of the subway, but she wasn't screaming either. She was saying the equivalent of "It was such a pain to draw all those little lines on this design...", but it was in french so there was a rude word in there ("je me suis fait chier à..."). Not SUPER rude, but not something you would say in front of your boss or whatever.

A woman about our age (in her 30's) was sitting close to us and told H, with a big smile, "Be careful—there are little ones here". I looked around us, there was ONE (1) kid. He looked about 9yo. He didn't look particularly shocked, and his mother right beside him wasn't even looking at us.

H apologised profusely (I think she just wanted to avoid confrontation), and the woman said "oh you're fine, I just hear you saying rude words, and I see his (the kid's) eyes sparkling" (I don't know if that's a good translation but basically implying that he was interested in our language and that he would maybe repeat it later). I just discreetly told H "I think he's going to hear worst things at school, but alright".

Why should we police our (perfectly normal adult) conversation just because a child might learn a "bad" word (even though I doubt it) and start using it? That is not my responsability! I do watch my mouth when I'm hanging out with my little cousin for example, but that's different, I'm directly interacting with her. Do I need to censor myself everytime I'm in public, on the off chance a kid might be around somewhere? Wtf?!
