USAA SafePilot Hard Braking Bug - Tested And Confirmed

I moved over to USAA this year and started using the SafePilot app with my two existing cars. Never a single harsh braking event.

I got a 2026 CR-V hybrid a month ago and from the first drive I was pinging a harsh braking event on average about every 1-5 miles every single drive.

After half a dozen calls to find out more about how the app works, have them adjust my history, and USAA's approved strategies to try and minimize the impact (drive other cars with app on, sign out when driving the CR-V) I started testing a lot of stuff.

  • Not braking at all on a trip - still happened. Even going downhill when the car is "braking" to decelerate to charge and I was not on the pedal at all
  • Different ways of securing and orienting the phone. Pocket, wedged in the console, on the charger, even bought a magnetic mount trying vertical and sideways for everything
  • B drive mode to see if I could mess with the brakes and find some way to avoid problems even if it was more effort
  • Had someone else with SafePilot installed (but not connected to CarPlay) drive the car - worked, but I didn't understand why at the time and thought it was a one-off because I immediate did the same route and got hit multiple times

I was on a Slack call using Bluetooth when I got in the car and forgot to sign out of the app the other day and CarPlay did not kick in.

To my amazement my drive didn't register a harsh driving event for the first time since I bought the car.

I've been running no CarPlay for a few days and no harsh braking events.

Called in and USAA confirms for my Honda 2026 infotainment, it truncates the GPS coordinates. They said there MAY be a Honda-side update in September that will fix it.

So what I pieced together is:

  • Speed change is listed as criteria for harsh braking, but it seems that the distance over which speed change happens matters very much. If you jam on your brakes the car would stop moving AND you'd see a speed change
  • When connected to CarPlay, the SafePilot app is using the phone accelerometer and car GPS data
  • Since the GPS coordinates are truncated, when you slow down it looks like your position is not changing as much as it is so speed change / distance looks like you slammed on the brakes
  • When not connected to CarPlay, the SafePilot app must be using the full GPS coordinates from the phoone so it has a more granular view of speed change / distance so it's clear that you're not coming to a dead stop

I'm not sure if this goes beyond this specific make / model / infotainment version, but if you can't drive without harsh braking events try disconnecting CarPlay and see what happens.

Black 2WD 2026 Sport-L out the door price data - central NC

Bought this week.

Hopefully this helps someone out.

Local market is pretty CR-V heavy. There wasn't s Sport-L on the lot by me for weeks. Maybe a couple of white ones, but even they sold quick.

By contrast the Toyota people were texting me RAV4s were coming in every week. I was also looking at a Sorrento, but they are hard to come by too. We have no need for AWD here and it kind of works against the hybrid/cost of ownership logic, but dealers seem to favor them - I guess for the higher absolute sales price?

It took about 10 weeks from first visit to when I needed to buy.

Looked like a couple of cars were on the lot, but I got there and they started looking around and nope it was just Honda listing them that they are coming eventually. However, the dealer could do a swap in their network.

There went my last shred of leverage. I looked at some other dealers, but prices and inventory was same story and I preferred to buy where I did for location and their specific service plans.

Purchase agreement column price is what I signed and put a deposit on. $41,355 all in, drive the car off the lot.

Executed agreement where I handed over cash was $42,383 total price to drive off.

Here's where I wound up. It's not exactly apples to apples and there are some things to note about buying at this dealership.

  • Buying comes with 7 years / 80,000 miles included oil changes and tire rotations
  • CR-V hybrids specifically come with lifetime power train warranty from that dealer
  • I told them don't even bother talking to me about any additional warranty. Showed me prices and I doubled down on the decline. He was like give me a minute and started knocking money off the car price and got me 7 years legit (after reading over it) everything "Platinum" level warranty. It was net $1,000 more for 4 years of not worrying about anything. I've recently had three warranty things that went in my favor big time so I'm pro warranty at the moment and after reading everything and splitting the discounted $2,572 as $1,000 to me it seemed like a no-brainer except for the fact that I am over-covered on this car
  • I had asked about a HomeLink mirror, which they threw in and since it was a transfer they were like you can have whatever comes on it - sticker lists prices for the mud guards, trunk tray, and all weather mats - comes to $1,136 all in

So if I say I paid $42,383 for a Sport-L 2WD it sounds high, but I got some additional value in $1,136 stuff I like on the car and I have 7 years of oil changes (figure $2,100 local dealer prices) and 4 years of kitchen sink warranty plus the dealer-specific lifetime.

Those are more like pre-paids so if I back it out if you were considering just the car without the oil change / tire rotation and the extras that places are starting not to add because they just have to waive them anyway it's like $39,150 OTD with enough warranty that I'm not sweating Godzilla coming through town - which is I think pretty reasonable given the local market / cost of living if I were just considering car + window tint, which is what I was expecting.

Bottom line I'm not thrilled with the new car market now, but I think overall I extracted the value I could even if it took paying a little more and I really like the car. It's almost as good as my 2018 Highlander SE, which is high praise.
