I mostly read scifi and fantasy in my free time and did not often come into contact with historical novels yet. So if I wanted to start reading them, which books/authors should I look for? Especially something for a typical fantasy fan maybe.
I've really enjoyed the Hussite Trilogy by Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski and found that they scratch an itch for me that I don't encounter often. Are there any books that are similar to those?
I enjoyed how the story was set in an actual historical period but showed a whole lot of magic and supernatural things going on if you scratch the surface a bit. And I liked the magical realism of lots of characters (late medieval people) taking it for granted that the supernatural is real. It created a lot of fun interactions.
Sapkowski also has a very witty style of prose that can switch pretty well and seamlessly between the dramatic/serious, the absurd, and the mundane and I feel like this aspect of the books make them what they are.
So TLDR:
Looking for books. Medieval Historical setting but with overt supernatural things going on. Would like a sense of Magical Realism. Engaging writing style preferred.
For the people not in the know: "Laser Masters" is a program that was mentioned in the "From A Certain Point Of View" story collection for Empire Strikes Back. The series apparently had an episode where a "Laster Master" was defending the Senate Chamber against an army of "monsters" with the words "None shall pass". This is clearly a reference to New Jedi Order, where this literally happens.
Tried to imitate the style of Dark Empire a bit because it's (visually) my favorite Star Wars comic.
