Realistic expectations?

I'm 10 weeks post injury (torn ATFL, CFL, deltoid, bone bruising, etc) and after significant dorsiflexion issues during recovery and being referred to an orthopaedic surgeon he has recommended arthroscopic ankle synovectomy and endoscopic gastroc lengthening. I was really hoping to avoid surgery but it seems inevitable. For those who have had those surgeries - how was your recovery? I'm a dancer and I'd love to get back to it eventually but I know there's a risk of nerve damage and/or weakening of calf from the lengthening procedure

Career change advice

For various reasons I'm looking to make a career change. The main reason is health - I'm constantly getting sick from customer facing positions because no one cares about shopping while sick (I'm investigating the possibility of being immunocompromised), and it's influencing the amount of shifts I'm getting in my current job. As an aside, I recently injured myself and have had issues with mobility during recovery so that's dragging out too.

In light of this, I would like something casual/flexible that isn't necessarily demanding on me physically. The ideal situation would be remote with flexible hours, but in person+less customer facing is obviously more likely to find. I've done call centre work before and cannot do it again, so please don't suggest this.

My transferrable skills include having a high attention to detail, great memory, excellent communication skills, good with kids, strong computer proficiencies, experience in stock management (both ordering and pinking/packing).

What suggestions would you have for jobs to look out for that meet my criteria?

Can I claim injury-specific Centrelink as a currently unemployed person?

I've sustained an injury which has taken much longer to heal than expected. I'm consulting with surgeons and physios right now but in the short term I cannot properly walk. Now that I know it's possibly a long time without employment in planning on applying for Centrelink.

For context, I haven't worked full-time since this time last year due to other health concerns but I just chose to rely on savings throughout that period, and before that I was gig freelancing. Returning to a previous casual job in retail was my loose plan prior to this injury, but returning to there now isn't possible.

When it comes to claiming Centrelink under the category of injury I know I'll need medical certificates etc, but do I also need proof of employment to qualify? I could probably speak to my old manager about confirming my inability to work shifts there now, but I haven't had shifts there since 2024 and I don't know for sure if he would still consider me an employee for those purposes.

If not and I'm classified as unemployed plus injured, would I need to apply for jobs via jobseeker to appease them? I've never had to navigate the system before and was hoping not to but if this continues it could be many months more before I'm capable of walking properly for full shifts in any workplace.

Impingement?

My MRI did not mention anything specific but my physio said I might have an anterior impingement (as well as other ligament and tendon issues). The hinge section is puffy and firm and is preventing proper dorsiflexion - my shin is essentially still vertical when I try to lunge, and part of that is likely due to this.

If anyone else has had similar, what worked for you to improve dorsiflexion? I'm almost 8 weeks post-injury with a significant sprain, only really weight bearing 3 weeks ago due to painful bone bruising, but my gait while walking is significantly hindered and despite pain starting to ease I'm struggling to walk properly.

Sprain progress is terrible

I'm 7 weeks post injury. MRI details below, taken at 5 weeks:

•Subcutaneous oedema medial to the ankle is likely post-traumatic. Features of a small superficial haematoma laterally.

•Bone bruising in the medial malleolus and medial talus.

•Sprain of the anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular and deltoid ligaments.

•Strain of the musculotendinous junction of the extensor digitorum longus.

•Tenosynovitis of flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus.

•Achilles tendinosis.

I'm at the point that I should definitely be challenging my weight bearing and walking, but my dorsiflexion ROM is terrible. When attempting to lunge my knee over my foot I can only get to roughly vertical, no further; before I had very good flexibility as I'm a dancer. Where I feel a pull is the back of my heel, as well as the sides of my ankle beneath the bones there. My physio has mentioned an anterior impingement that isn't recorded on the MRI notes but it definitely feels like what she says - a block preventing movement and flexibility.

I have been given a set of exercises/stretches to do multiple times daily but I'm seeing little to no progress. Those include circles/alphabet, seated and standing calf raises, various seated band stretches, and trying to lunge with the bad leg up on a short chair or table (I have tried it with and without band assist and see no difference between them)

What's the likely cause of this roadblock? I can't get back into my physio for another 2 weeks so I'm flying blind a bit and I'm at a loss of what to do if nothing is improving. I can't successfully walk without improved dorsiflexion so I'm stuck on crutches until then.

Dorsiflexion issue post-injury

Hi all, I badly sprained my ankle 6.5 weeks ago in dance class - rolled it and landed with all of my weight on it, it wasn't pretty! I spent approximately 4 weeks doing nothing but RICE due to overwhelming swelling (initial ultrasound was inconclusive due to the swelling). Then my physio had me in a boot for 1.5-2 weeks because we still weren't sure if it was fractured somewhere. Finally got an MRI which showed the following:

•Subcutaneous oedema medial to the ankle is likely post-traumatic. Features of a small superficial haematoma laterally.

•Bone bruising in the medial malleolus and medial talus.

•Sprain of the anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular and deltoid ligaments.

•Strain of the musculotendinous junction of the extensor digitorum longus.

•Tenosynovitis of flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus.

•Achilles tendinosis.

So not broken after all, but badly damaged nonetheless.

The physio cleared me to start weight bearing and walking but I'm struggling so much with my dorsiflexion that we've pulled right back on that. I have an anterior impingement plus all that is listed above so my ankle is very resistant to anything right now - I can only just stand up tall with my leg straight before I feel a lot of tension/pain in/around the inside of my ankle. I cannot even begin to bend that knee when my heel is on the ground, keeping the heel on the ground at all is difficult.

For anyone who has had similar issues, what worked for you? At the moment I'm doing lots of ankle circles and band stretches, seated and standing calf raises, plus simply standing in place with crutches support for 30s at a time. I can't do any lunges as it won't release with a bent leg at all yet. I'm trying to stay positive but this is a huge setback 😫
