Don't Sit for an Exam Unless you've sincerely studied! Consequences + Time Out Penalties Exist

Just learned that my husband has to wait 60 days to retake the Social Studies Exam in California!

Today, Sunday Oct 4th, he failed again by 1 point and this was his 3rd try.

The silver lining is that his score went up but he also didn't truly buckle down until 9 days before this exam.

He is new to America coming from West Africa (5 months) and his main distraction has been his mobile phone!!!!

He came from a country where data was extremely limited and costly, now he resides in the land of unlimited data, and has developed an addiction.

As his wife, we talked and I placed restriction controls on his phone... and voila 20% progress in his Onsego modules in 1 Day! The restrictions will stay on the phone until he passes!

We both agree that Onsego gels with him more than than the Kaplan book.

But that's the issue, he doesn't like reading, which is the mountain that he's climbing!

I purchased 3 books so far, Barron's and Princeton Review GED books, which he left behind in West Africa; hence the Kaplan book he's using right now. All 3 books are solid investments.

Onsego is worth the $$$, so is Union Test Prep!

The online suites for the books above all have good practice Test questions.

I distrust the Ready Practice Tests, as he's scored well on several and FAILED the real exam.

He just needs to drill and practice the test methods he just started using last week.

This is the 2nd time he ran out of time! Made it to question 35 this time.

And he seems to be struggling with interpreting data, graphs and maps as well as distinguishing fact vs opinion.

We can't go backwards in time but he's very regretful he went against my advice to reschedule the 1st and 2nd exams because now the time sensitive matters connected are at risk due to the 60 day wait before his next attempt.

I'll post more updates as he progresses through the next 60 days!

Pray 4 him as he must study and pass both the GED and the ASVAB for the US Military!

HireLAX Apprenticeship vs LATTC

Husband is new to America and was looking forward to getting into the HireLAX Summer 2026 cohort but didn't make the last cut today, June 10th. He's bummed about it.

He also just got news that he landed a part time job at Home Depot which would be his 1st job in America!

Hubbie is taking Summer GED Courses to finally pass the exam although he has an Associates Degree from 20 years ago... school in another country lost the transcripts in a flood so no way to get an equivalency evaluation with just the diploma alone.

He is also enrolled to start at LATTC, starting General Education requirements this Fall Semester, hoping to gain entry to the electrical lineman program.

Should he try to reapply for HireLAX around the Holiday, after he's been here in school for a Semester and in America for 7 months?

Should he just focus on an Apprenticeship at IBEW 18 nearby instead of HireLAX?

Or should he just focus on LATTC and Home Depot?

Is it possible or even advantageous to doing an Apprenticeship while a Student at LATTC!

All replies are helpful. Thanks.

Spousal CR1 / IR1 new Green Card + SS Card - Expectations as of May 20th 2026

Spouse arrived on Tuesday May 5th, paid Immigrant fee with USCIS on Wednesday May 6th but bank has it posted on Friday May 8th.

Today, Tuesday May 19th, makes 2 weeks since they entered America 🎉🎊🎉🎊

Btw, I made an appointment online at the SSA office before my spouse arrived for Friday May 8th. The SSA Officer could see that the new SSN was reserved and we received it in the mail on Tuesday May 12th because they want you to verify in person now if possible. So take note of getting to a SSA office to get the SS Card faster.

*As of Wednesday, May 20th 2:30pm PST : The Green Card was mailed Today according to the USCIS GC order tracker. We should receive it vial USPS mail in less than 1 week from today! That is 2 weeks from the date of payment online of the Immigrant Fee*

Does the processing and delivery via mail vary by state?

Just wondering the average wait time.

Sharing to gather transparency for other Redditors to help with expectations and planning.
