Epilepsy and stomach cancer?

I'm thinking about getting a groenendael puppy in the future.

Fortunately the belgian shepherd breed is generally healthy, but I just found out that they can be at increased risk for epilepsy and in the case of tervurens and groenendaels, also stomach cancer.

How common is this? Does anyone here have experience with those two varieties?

GSD vs WSS vs belgian shepherd?

So my mom and I have been thinking about possibly adding another dog to the family in 2-3 years after we move to our new house.

She has expressed interest in large herding breeds, she likes GSDs, belgian shepherds (particularly groenendael) and WSS recently caught her attention. For me, if it's from the herding group, I'm game.

So we're researching starting from now. Important details about us, we have a cat and a high energy dog from the sporting group. We're an active family and we go on hikes in the countryside once a week. Our dog gets several walks a day on green spaces and while this new dog will be a family dog, I'm particularly interested in dog sports such as obedience, disc dog and IGP (I don't need to do them all)

We have a some experience with the GSD and the belgian shepherd but we don't know WSS at all.

With the GSD we are a bit worried about health and this is what I want to ask. I'm not worried about hip dysplasia because I know ethical breeders are doing fine with the breed, and our club requires both parents of a GSD litter to be clear of HD to be able to register the pups (since 2019 both parents, since 2007 only the sire). I'm a little worried about pancreatitis and allergies/intolerances. I'm not sure how risky this is with an ethically bred dog.

I don't know which health issues WSS are prone to, I gather they share the same as GSDs but I'm not sure how common they really are, if they have the same risk or are a little healthier. Not worried about the belgians at all, they're generally healthy.

Another thing is temperament and drive. As I said, I don't know WSS, I read they are a medium-high energy breed and the people I've spoken either said that they're super chill or super active. And about the drive and ability to do dog sports, no idea. My current dog is high energy but his drive is shit so he only does scent work, I don't want to repeat this situation.

GSDs (show line) are high energy and high drive but manageable. Seem good I guess, and probably I have a lot of choice considering that I could find breeders that mostly do shows and breed as pets or breeders that show and do some IGP. I was also thinking about a working line but I'm concerned that I could be going overboard with that option (malinois for instance are discarded)

The belgian groenendael is the best bet in health and drive IMO, so essentially I want to know the other two.

If anyone here is experienced with any of those breeds, your opinions would be much appreciated.

A few months ago I started trying to teach my 3 y.o brittany recall. I had him since he was a puppy but he barely received any training and he can't be offleash.

Because of the lack of freedom he values that a lot, to the point he bolts away the moment he feels the leash get loose. We also had really bad learning experiences when he used to slip out of his collar and run away, and since he's not scared of anything and goes nuts when he has a little freedom he got himself in dangerous situations and we had to get him, and he learned that he can avoid us easily and doesn't let himself be grabbed. He also totally ignores when we call him. I can't let offleash a dog that avoids all physical contact while outside.

I started walking him on a 15 meters leash, sometimes I don't even hold the end and he behaves really good, that's the closer to offleash we got. But since he's used to long leashes it's more psychological for him, he thinks he's tethered and doesn't run off. Making a transition could be hard, and I don't even know when I could start letting him offleash.

We have a long way to go. This is what I did. Long leash and when I want to change direction, I just tug a little, turn and keep walking on a new direction. Here's what I achieved:

-Dog now changes directions 60-70% of times without the tug, just looking at me when I walk away (it could be more often if I call him too)

-Check on me more often and will look at my direction when I say his name. This often makes him change direction towards me as well (he used to completely ignore his name)

-When I stop, he stops. Sometimes I need to step on the leash then release. He waits for me to keep walking, often not moving until I walk past him and stares at me. Sometimes I have to say "let's go" for him to keep going.

All of this without treats, just long leash and see. He really behaves better when he gets more freedom and I wasn't expecting him to actually "work" with me. I believe this is how hunting dogs learn.

But there are things that need to be addressed too:

-He changes direction and walks in the new direction I'm walking, but he gets distracted after a while and starts mindlessly following scent trails, walking off at a 45 degree angle from my direction. Calling his name won't work, I need a little tug to catch his attention and he will happily follow me, but then it starts again. I rely on the leash to get him to go on a new direction for a longer time.

-He changes direction but doesn't get close to me. Not even with treats. If I call him he changes direction and walks past me, I call him again and walks past me on the opposite direction, but I can't get him to stop and take the treat. Still avoidant. If this goes on for a while he gets frustrated and doesn't respond to his name anymore, or gets overstimulated and does very strong changes of direction, now running past me and hitting the end of the leash instead of walking. In order to give him the treat I need to shorten the leash and force him close to me. Also no matter how high value the treat is at home, he doesn't care much about it outside. He will eat it but he doesn't seem to enjoy it. I don't know what I'm teaching him here or what I could do to make him understand what I expect from him. He seems to be trying his best to understand and that's why he gets frustrated.

I need help with these last two points. The idea is to get him to stick to one direction sometimes and be able to come back and get a treat/be grabbed/stop by me instead of running away or just changing direction.
