Proton VPN vs Lantern vs X-VPN, quick real-world comparison

Proton VPN vs Lantern vs X-VPN — quick real-world comparison

I've been running all three for different reasons (daily privacy, helping family bypass censorship, general use) so figured I'd share honest notes instead of another affiliate-post.

Proton VPN — audited no-logs, Swiss based, open-source apps, solid free tier that isn't a bait-and-switch. Speeds are great on WireGuard. Downsides: pricier at the top tier, split tunneling still a bit behind on some platforms, app can feel "corporate" if you just want something simple.

Lantern — built specifically for beating heavy censorship (Great Firewall, Iran, etc). Uses adaptive obfuscation + a mesh-ish network so it keeps working when regular VPNs get detected and blocked. One of the better free options if you need to get past state-level blocking. Downsides: less polished UX, speeds can be inconsistent since it's not hitting dedicated server farms, overkill if you just want fast streaming/torrenting.

X-VPN — my daily driver. Audited no-logs policy, and it's genuinely one of the more reliable options I've used for getting past network filters/firewalls, high success rate in my experience. PC app is clean, no ads. Only real downside is the mobile app has ads on the free tier, kind of annoying but not a dealbreaker. Solid all-rounder for both everyday use and filter-bypassing. I usually use this to bypass my workplace's network filter to slack off when I feel like it (dont tell my managers please).

Tick table version:

Feature Proton VPN Lantern X-VPN
Open source ✅ (partially)
Audited no-logs ⚠️ (not independently audited)
Bypasses Great Firewall / heavy censorship ⚠️ (can get blocked)
Speed for streaming/torrenting ⚠️ (inconsistent)
Ads on free tier ⚠️ (mobile only, PC clean)
Transparent ownership/jurisdiction ⚠️
Ease of use ⚠️
Price ⚠️ (pricier top tier) ✅ (free)

Was wondering, did anybody manage to bypass the china firewall with x-vpn yet? It would be interesting!

So I recently scrolled through many posts about Endfield not being able to be run on a Mac, so I decided to make a guide on how to run Endfield on your Mac!

  1. Download PlayCover: Head to the official PlayCover website or GitHub and install the latest version.
  2. Download the Decrypted IPA: Obtain a decrypted IPA from your preferred trusted source.
  3. Import the File: Open PlayCover and run the IPA by dragging and dropping it directly into the PlayCover window.
  4. Install: Wait for the installation process to complete on your Mac.
  5. Access Settings: Once installed, Right-click the Endfield app icon inside the PlayCover library NOT from the Applications folder.
  6. Customize Graphics: Go to the Graphics tab and adjust the resolution and aspect ratio to your preference.
  7. Bypasses : Navigate to the Bypasses tab. To ensure the game runs without kicking you out every 120s or jailbreak detection, make sure your settings match the configuration shown in image I have uploaded. Specifically, ensure the following are ticked:
    • Enable PlayChain (Experimental)
    • PlayChain debugging
    • Enable Jailbreak Bypass (Experimental)
    • Insert Introspection libraries
    • Force Insert iOS Frameworks
    • Prevent usleep call spamming
  8. Launch: Click OK, open the app, and have fun! (there is still a 40gb download and the graphics WILL not be as good as a computer, but perfect enough for progression and story!)

NOTE: Dont forget to setup a keymap for Endfield! Use CMD+K to open the keymap settings, and apply the keymap! If you messed up on button, you can use CMD+DEL to delete the button!

have fun!
