Laptop shuts down when playing "heavier" games
Hi everyone!
For a while, I have been using my laptop for gaming, and I felt that it always underperformed.
My specs: ASUS Vivobook Pro M6500QC (15.6'' - AMD Ryzen 7 5800H - RAM: 16 GB - 1 TB SSD - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050).
A few weeks ago, I decided to look into what could be causing the issue. At first, I thought that forcing the preferred graphics card in the NVIDIA control panel would solve it, but heavier games, like Rainbow Six Siege, would still stutter and suffer from FPS drops.
Later, I found out that manually speeding up the fans solved the stuttering issue, but it introduced a new one. Now, when I play "heavier" games, the PC just shuts down completely (no blue screen, just hard power off).
For reference, here is everything I've checked:
- Battery Cap: I normally have my battery capped at 60% (via MyASUS), but I tested changing it to 80% and 100%. The shutdowns still happen.
- Power: The computer is always plugged in, although not directly into the outlet, but i have tested it and it makes no difference.
- FPS Lock: I locked my max frame rate to 60 FPS in the NVIDIA Control Panel, but the shutdowns still happened.
I finally got the computer to stop shutting down by locking the FPS to 58 and changing the laptop's power profile to Balanced instead of Performance mode.
However, I want to understand what I actually need to fix, as this solution feels more like a band-aid than an actual cure. Does anyone know what the underlying hardware issue might be and how to properly fix it? Thanks in advance!
