Steam Controller 2 Bluetooth disconnects and won't reconnect until Steam Deck reboot
I'm having a strange issue with my new Steam Controller 2 on a Steam Deck LCD (latest SteamOS).
The controller connects over Bluetooth and works perfectly for a while, but then it randomly disconnects during gameplay. After that:
- The controller remains listed as a paired device.
- Turning the controller back on causes the Deck to briefly show it connecting, then it immediately disconnects.
- If I remove ("Forget") the controller, I can't pair it again until I reboot the Steam Deck.
- Other Bluetooth devices (tested with a PS4 controller) pair and reconnect normally.
- Tried on my PC and it worked without issue via bluetooth
- A factory reset/reinstall of SteamOS did not fix the issue.
I also captured some logs when failing to reconnect:
bluetoothctl
Connected: yes
Disconnected: Unknown (Unspecified)
journalctl
profiles/input/hog-lib.c:set_report_cb() Error setting Report value: Attribute PDU was invalid
profiles/input/hog-lib.c:set_report_cb() Error setting Report value: Request attribute has encountered an unlikely error
I'm on the latest controller firmware (or at least Steam doesn't offer an update, "Force update all connected Steam Controllers" does nothing).
Has anyone else with the new Steam Controller experienced this, especially on an LCD Steam Deck? Any ideas or workarounds besides using the wireless puck?
Deadzones Off at Startup
Having an issue where, on startup, the right stick deadzone is way bigger than it should be. I posted videos below (hard to see) of the before and after. Note how I move the stick and the mouse does not move, where after it moves with any input.
The only way to fix it is to click the "Edit" for desktop layout. I don't have to change it at all, once the window for the controller config opens it is fixed.
This was also happening before I got my steam controller with my XBOX controller
I'm using an Xbox one series X controller and half the time when I power my PC on the desktop profile has the right stick dead zone as way higher when moving the mouse. I can move the joystick a bit and the mouse does not move.
However, if I open the device input test or open the desktop layout (I don't even need to change anything, just open it) after closing it works perfectly.
Any idea why this is?
I posted about this in the Steam Deck subreddit for the same reason.
If you have not used a steam deck and are interested in buying this controller for the track pads, be aware that some people may have trouble if they have something called linburg-comstock syndrome. I have it myself in my right hand and it makes it very hard to use the trackpad. It makes it impossible to bend your thumb without bending your index finger. It's not an uncommon condition and many people do not realize they have it.
Just food for thought before people put down potentially $100+
