Rewrite TanjaOS in C++?

So, like you all know, TanjaOS is in C and Assembly, but a few people have been telling me that C++ is better than C. The only problem with this is that I don’t know how to code in C++. I only know, Bash, C and Assembly. So if someone is willing to fork TanjaOS and rewrite it in C++, by all means, go for it. Or, I could learn C++ and rewrite it myself. Let me know in the comments.

Rating AneoEngine

So, Rocco Himel, created an operating system called AneoEngine, and I’m going to rate it.

My rating: 8/10

And I mean that as a technical hobby-OS project, not as a general-purpose operating system.

What impresses me:

It’s genuinely ambitious. The project has its own kernel, compiler/language tooling, boot process, shell/UI, and graphics work rather than simply being a themed Linux distribution. The creator says it’s over 25K lines and has been worked on for about 1.2 years. It’s actually evolving. There are public releases ranging from V0.2 to a 1.0 demo, so this isn’t just a one-off “look, I made an OS” project.
The design has a strong identity. The 640×480 VGA/DOS-inspired interface is deliberately simple rather than trying to imitate Windows or Linux.
There is real low-level engineering going on. The discussion around framebuffer performance, write combining, PAT/MTRRs, double buffering, etc. shows that the project has gotten into legitimate OS/hardware territory. The scope is unusually coherent. It’s clearly built around the philosophy of keeping the system simple rather than accumulating features forever.

Now, can it compete with TanjaOS? Maybe, because TanjaOS has an installer, but AneoEngine has a graphical framebuffer and a mouse pointer. Now it comes down to 2 things: Speed and stability. TanjaOS is quite stable, and decently fast. AneoEngine has a smooth 640x480 TempleOS-style text engine, and responsive mouse pointer. But honestly, I think AneoEngine gets the win due to its awesome GUI. Rocco Himel, if you’re reading this post, great job, man. This is a pure masterpiece and is absolutely beautiful.

Corrupted BIOS

I have an Intel OEM Ultrabook B14Y 14-inch, based on a Pegatron B14Y Rev. 2.0 motherboard.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i3-3217U @ 1.80 GHz

RAM: 4 GB DDR3

Motherboard: Pegatron B14Y Rev. 2.0

BIOS flash chip: Winbond 25Q64-family chip (the B14Y Rev. 2.0 dumps I’ve found reference the 25Q64BVSIG)

Installed OS: Arch Linux

What happened:

I attempted to flash SeaBIOS onto the laptop. The flash went wrong and the laptop is now essentially bricked.

It powers on but gives me a black screen, and I can’t get into the BIOS or boot an operating system.

I’ve tried the usual recovery key combinations, including Win+B and Win+V, but they haven’t recovered it.

I’ve been trying to find a known-good Pegatron B14Y Rev. 2.0 BIOS/SPI dump so I can recover the original firmware. I’ve found references to dumps on Remont-Aud, Vinafix, and other BIOS-repair sites, but the downloads are either behind subscriptions or otherwise inaccessible.

I’m looking specifically for a known-good full BIOS/SPI dump for the Pegatron B14Y Rev. 2.0, preferably a free copy.

If anyone has one, or knows where I can get one, I’d really appreciate it!

New style!

I just wanted to make it known, that before my laptop’s BIOS stopped working, i gave TanjaOS a new style. It has colors, it has alphabetical order for files and folders, the help command takes less space on the screen, and it now has updated and fixed directory logic so now you can’t make a folder or file inside of a folder that doesn’t exist. Before, you could and the folder or file you tried to make in the nonexistent folder would be invisible and so would the nonexistent folder. Now that’s it fixed i can proudly say, TanjaOS is usable.

Latest TanjaOS news!

So, I have some news for everyone. My laptop’s BIOS is corrupted, so that means… No TanjaOS updates for a while. But worry not! I will get a new laptop as soon as I can so I can continue to release new updates for TanjaOS. So in the meantime, you still all have my absolute full permission to investigate TanjaOS, play with it, and learn. If you have any questions or concerns, please comment them, and I will answer them as soon as I can.

Compiling TanjaOS on BSD

TanjaOS now supports compiling on BSD systems. A new Makefile called Makefile.bsd was made to compile TanjaOS on BSD systems. “Why does it now support BSD systems now? Why not sooner or later?” To answer that, this is because I have switched from Arch Linux to FreeBSD, which kind of forces me to make a new Makefile for compiling on BSD. To use this new Makefile.bsd you have to first make sure gmake, gcc, and nasm are installed. And then use ‘gmake <option> -f Makefile.bsd’ also for those who don’t know, the ‘-f’ flag is to tell gmake to which Makefile to use and where it is. If you’re interested, you can get TanjaOS at www.tanjaos.org or if you want the source, you can download TanjaOS-base.tar.gz at www.tanjaos.org/downloads

New UNIX-like operating system!

I made a new UNIX-like operating system from scratch called "TanjaOS" which you can get at www.tanjaos.org and it took me a couple of months to make and will get lots of updates. It features basic UNIX commands such as: cat, cd, clear, echo, help, ls, mkdir, pwd, reboot, rm, rmdir, touch, exit, and hostname. TanjaOS can boot on any x86_64 (amd64) or i386 (x86) machine with Legacy BIOS, and is completely free and open-source.
