Melanotaenia pygmaea and Melanotaenia nigrans aquarium
showcasing these contrast between these two beautiful species. they are just hanging out here, still trying to capture decent footage of when they are sparring, which they do very regularly and intensely.
relatively closely related among rainbowfish, and found within maybe 100kms of each other in the Kimberley, although Melanotaenia nigrans is distributed throughout much of northern Australia, while Melanotaenia pygmaea is limited to a few tributaries of the Prince Regent River.
this is only a small area of their tank (still not all that densely planted), it is easier to capture footage against this background. both species are very suited to densely planted tanks, however only Melanotaenia nigrans is found amongst significant aquatic vegetation in the wild.
